Item Blurring the Boundary between History and Fictionin Salman Rushdie’s The Satanic Verses(Department of English, 2009) Pathak, SubashThe Satanic Verses is a post modern fiction about the condition of migrant people, struggling to protect their existence in foreign-land because the history and religious rigidity does not allow them to cope on the situation and turn it in to religion burden.By fictionalizing the history of Islamic world through the dream vision of protagonist and of fallible narrator, novel deliberately decontextualizes the origin of religious discourse.By inserting the imagination to the historical records, Rushdie fictionalized single holy treatise into plural versions. Salman Rushdie uses historiographic meta fiction as a narrative tool to focuses on fictional formation of historical records so that the politics behind every human artifact could appear. By exposing how history hides its fiction and highlights its fact to meet their subjective goal, this research study comes to the conclusion that so-called transcendental holy writ is only mere construction of human imagination. The novel explores the human divided self in multicultural milieu that does not rely on their own cultural root. Therefore, historical episode is suspected and triggered the human imagination in place of religious submission. The novel mixes fiction and history so that it fits to the present post modernist context.Item Julian Barnes’The Sense of an Ending as a Postmodern Historiographic Metafiction(Department of English, 2018) Ghimire, Dev BahadurThe major thrust of this research is toexplore how the postmodern metafiction opens up alternative perspectives to the constructed notion of truth,objectivity and validity of narration told by protagonist Tony in Barnes' novel,The Sense of an Ending.The self-reflexive narration by the protagonist,Tony, is questioned by installing and subverting at the same time as which bears no objective presentations. For him, understandings of his past turned out to be rather his lies andself-delusionlater made himfeel paranoia intheremaining life. Tony's recalling of past is challenged when he got the letter given by Veronica finds his direct or indirect role regarding the death of Adrian before that for Tony, the death of Adrian was to meet the philosophical reasoning of his suicidal note. On this light, it is proved that his memory is inevitably unreliable, imperfect and his intentionally fragmented story telling was a construct that produces unrest and remorse on him as he confesses his own responsibility for. In this way, the choice of documentation was subjective and made differences between the world of himself and reality which seeks the readers to see his each and every structures critically in Barnes' novel,The Sense of an Ending.Item Self-reflexivity in Salman Rushdie’sShame(Department of English, 2021) Pokhrel, PawanThis research paper explores Salman Rushdie’s novelShameby focusing on the self-reflexive nature of narration. It attempts to highlight that this approach ofthe authorto self-reference his own processdraws attention tothe constructed nature of thenoveland it also challengesthevariousoppressive ideologiesby drawing attention to their construction.There is a regular intrusion ofnarrator as the authorof thenovel where he discusses in length about his inspiration, ideas and approach to write this novel.Here the author reflects upon the various issues like historical narrative, religion, relationship of shame and violence, oppression of women.Instead of justdramatizing the issues and themes, the author examines their construction and function. By drawing attention to their conventionality, he problematizes their use as a tool of oppression.Thereareseveral references to the events and characters of Pakistan’s history as well as other literary works.This paper primarily uses Linda Hutcheon’s concept of Historiographic Metafictionand Patricia Waugh’s ideas of metafictionto explore how the Rushdie’s self-aware and self-referential technique of storytelling focuses on the intertextual and parodic nature of this novel.The self- reflexive act of the narrator illuminates the various themes and issues discussed by the novel.Thenarrator lays bare the traditional methods of characterization and narrationandhighlights the constructed nature and artificiality of the textas well as reality.It also foregrounds the relationship between fiction and the world outside the fiction.
