Item Analysis of Poems in New Generation English(Faculty of English Education, 2013) Neupane, Shree PrasadThis research entitled ”Analysis of Poems in New Generation English” is fully shaped under the constructive suggestions and guidance of the team of English teachers of Sukuna Multiple Campus. This research is an attempt to find out the appropriateness of the poems included in the textbook ’New Generation English’ prescribed for the students of Bachelor first year in Education. The main objective of the research was to find out the appropriateness of the poems on the basis of the students’ level, interest, and the standard. The appropriateness of the poems was analyzed on the basis of the questionnaires prepared separately for the students of B.Ed. second year and the teachers teaching the same subject in the colleges of Morang district for at least a year. This research work consists of four chapters. Chapter one includes preliminary information of English language, literature and genres of English literature. This chapter also deals about the genres of Poetry, review of the related literature and objective of the study. Chapter two deals with the methodology adopted for the study. Chapter three is all about the analysis of the collected data and the chapter four consists of findings and suggestions.Item Envisioning Sociolinguistic Indicators in Langston Hughes' Selected Poems(Department of English, 2015) Paudel, SushilThe research entitled "Envisioning Sociolinguistic Indicators in Langston Hughes's Selected Poems" deals with the linguistic features such as sounds, words and structures to underscore social issues like race, class, gender, ethnicity, equality and inequality, religions and culture, art and music, nationality. The use of language in Hughes poetry talks about race, class, gender, ethnicity, religion, culture, food, art music of particular group and gives identity to African American people. The writings of Hughes raise racial consciousness among African American people and then sociopolitical situation. The research assumes that language is an indicator of social values and practices. Hughes uses sociolinguistic indicator in the poetry to foreground linguistic and cultural diversity of African American people.Item Linguistic landscape in Kathmandu: An analysis of linguistic features(Department of English Education, 2022) Maharjan, JinaThis present study entitled 'Linguistic Landscape in Kathmandu: An Analysis of Linguistic Features' aimed to explore linguistic features in English usage on linguistic landscape and to discover motives of using it on their signboards. Public textual signage as Linguistic Landscape (LL) around Kathmandu valley that used linguistic features such as code-mixing/ switching, stylistics, scripts, transliteration, and translation was selected purposively as a sample. This study used observation and interview as tools of primary data collection and some related documents were reviewed for secondary data. Hundred photographs were analyzed whereas ten shop owners were interviewed to get the required information. After the collection of data, they were coded thematically and analyzed descriptively. The findings of this study resulted that a variety of images and themes, alluring to the distinctive identities such as globalization and English, sloganeering the signboards, multimodality, preservation and promotion of local languages. Similarly, the predominance of English in the LL as expression, its use, identification, code, theme, symbolism and readable script can be observed as motivation to the advertisers. There are five chapters in this research study. The first chapter, introduction part of this study consists of background of the study, statement of the problem, objectives of the study, research questions, significance of the study, delimitations of the study, and operational definition of the key terms. In the second chapter related literature are reviewed thematically. Introduction of globalization and English, LL, features of LL, functions of LL, linguistic features such as code-mixing/ switching, transliteration, stylistics, scripts, and translation are included. It also consists of empirical review, its implication for the study and conceptual framework of this study. Chapter three discusses about methods and procedures of the study. It consists of design of the study, population, sample and sampling strategy, research tools, sources of data, data collection procedures, data analysis procedures, and ethical considerations. Fourth chapter of this study incorporates the analyzed and interpretations of the data where fifth chapter shows findings, conclusion and recommendations related to policy, practice and further research. References and appendices are included at the last part of this thesis.Item Use of Language in Advertisement: A Linguistic Landscape Perspective(Department of English Education, 2018) Joshi, Mohan RajThe study entitled Use of Language in Advertisement: A Linguistic Landscape Perspective was conducted to explore the use of language on LLs of advertisement in terms of nature of language, linguistic features, creativity and forms of language use. Based on the survey, quantitative research design, eighty non-governmental images of the language used in LLs were collected from Kirtipur, Balkhu, Bagbazar, Dillibazar, Jamal and Thamel areas of Kathmandu district. Among eighty LLs as population, forty LLs were selected as a sample for the study using purposive nonrandom sampling strategy. As per the objectives of the study, the checklist was used to analyze the use of language on LLs of advertisement. The data were analyzed and interpreted using simple statistical tools such as frequency and percentile. The study found that there were altogether six languages used on LLs of different areas of Kathmandu district including English, Nepali, Newari, Japanese, Chinese and Korean. The English language was given high priority. The English Language is the most dominant in LLs of Kathmandu district. The vast majority of LL is bilingual while a significant portion is monolingual; the presence of multilingual is relatively rare. Transliteration is used in approximately half of the LLs in the total sample. Translation is used in around one-third of LLs. Code-mixing is used in a significantly low in LLs. This thesis consists of five different chapters. The first chapter consists of a background of the study, statement of the problem, objectives of the study, research questions, significance of the study, delimitations of the study and operational definition of the key terms. Similarly, the second chapter deals with the review of theoretical as well as empirical literature and its implication for the study; moreover, it includes the conceptual framework. Likewise, the third chapter deals with the methods and procedures of the study including research design and method of the study, population, sample and sampling strategy, research tools, sources of data, data collection procedures, data analysis and interpretation procedures, and ethical considerations. In the same way, the fourth chapter contains the analysis and interpretation of the results. Finally, the fifth chapter incorporates the findings and conclusion of the study followed by some policy related, practice-related, and further research related recommendation based on the study.
