Item Discourse analysis of linguistic landscape in the main streets of Kathmandu(Department of English Educaion, 2022) Bisural, SaraswatiThe present study entitled DiscourseAnalysis of Linguistic Landscape in the Main Streets of Kathmanduwas carried out toanalyze the contextual meaning of discourse used in sign boards, to find out the features of linguistics landscape and to suggest pedagogical implications. It was carried out by using both primary and secondary sources of data. The data were collected from one hundred signboards from different commercial places including Bagbazzar, Darbarmarga andNewroad by using the purposive non-random sampling method. To achieve the objectives, observation and taking the photos of signboards were chosen as a tool for data collection. They were analyzed descriptively.The findings showed that single word preformed different meaning in different situation. Ambiguous and vague words were not used in signboards which made the sentences clear and meaningful.Linguistic features likecode mixing/switching, stylistics, translation transliteration, scripts were highly used in signboard. Those features made sentences more attractive, eye catchy and meaningful. Regarding pedagogical context, signboards can be used to teach vocabulary, speaking and reading skills. There are five chapters in this research study. The first chapter consists of background of the study, statement of the problem, objectives of the study, research questions, significance of the study, delimitation of the study, and operational definition of the key terms. Similarly, second chapter includes both of theoretical and empirical literature, along with the implications of the review for the study. It also includes conceptual framework. Likewise, chapter three deals with the method and procedures of the study. It also includes research design, population, sample, sampling strategies, data collection tools, data collection procedures, data interpretation procedures and ethical considerations. Furthermore,the fourth chapter includes analysis and interpretation of data. Equivalently, the fifth chapter presents finding and conclusion of the study. Moreover, it also suggests some pedagogical implications based on policy related, practice related and further research related. This chapter followed by references used for the study.Item Language used in facebook chat(Department of English Education, 2018) Paudel, SaraswatiThis study entitled “LANGUAGE USED IN FACEBOOK CHAT” aims to analyze the language used on online chatting in terms of linguistic, functional and sign system, code mixing related features of the language. The researcher used purposive sampling method and collected data from 15 students and analyzed those data using simple analytical tools such as frequency counts. Furthermore, qualitative datawas analyzed using thematic categorization followed by descriptive tools. The major finding of the research was that the student used grammatically and functionally ill form expressions of English language on online chatting such as most of the students used shortening and abbreviated form of words on their use of English language on online chatting. This thesis is divided into five chapters. The first chapter deals with the introduction which mainly consists of the back ground of the study; Linguistic landscape and world Englishes and then statement of the problem, objectives of the study, research questions, delimitations of the study, operational definitions of the study. The second chapter deals with review of related theoretical literature under that globalization of English, the linguistic landscape, areas and features of linguistic landscape, functions and taxonomy of linguistic landscape, linguistic features of English usage on linguistic landscape then empirical literature review then implications of the study and conceptual framework. Similarly, the third chapter deals with the methods and procedures of the study.The forth chapter is the main part of the study which includes analysis and interpretation of the data. The data is discussed descriptively. The last chapter deals with the findings, conclusions and recommendations made after the analysis of the data.Item Linguistic landscape in Kathmandu: An analysis of linguistic features(Department of English Education, 2022) Maharjan, JinaThis present study entitled 'Linguistic Landscape in Kathmandu: An Analysis of Linguistic Features' aimed to explore linguistic features in English usage on linguistic landscape and to discover motives of using it on their signboards. Public textual signage as Linguistic Landscape (LL) around Kathmandu valley that used linguistic features such as code-mixing/ switching, stylistics, scripts, transliteration, and translation was selected purposively as a sample. This study used observation and interview as tools of primary data collection and some related documents were reviewed for secondary data. Hundred photographs were analyzed whereas ten shop owners were interviewed to get the required information. After the collection of data, they were coded thematically and analyzed descriptively. The findings of this study resulted that a variety of images and themes, alluring to the distinctive identities such as globalization and English, sloganeering the signboards, multimodality, preservation and promotion of local languages. Similarly, the predominance of English in the LL as expression, its use, identification, code, theme, symbolism and readable script can be observed as motivation to the advertisers. There are five chapters in this research study. The first chapter, introduction part of this study consists of background of the study, statement of the problem, objectives of the study, research questions, significance of the study, delimitations of the study, and operational definition of the key terms. In the second chapter related literature are reviewed thematically. Introduction of globalization and English, LL, features of LL, functions of LL, linguistic features such as code-mixing/ switching, transliteration, stylistics, scripts, and translation are included. It also consists of empirical review, its implication for the study and conceptual framework of this study. Chapter three discusses about methods and procedures of the study. It consists of design of the study, population, sample and sampling strategy, research tools, sources of data, data collection procedures, data analysis procedures, and ethical considerations. Fourth chapter of this study incorporates the analyzed and interpretations of the data where fifth chapter shows findings, conclusion and recommendations related to policy, practice and further research. References and appendices are included at the last part of this thesis.Item Localization of English in Linguistic Landscape in Kathmandu(Department of English Education, 2018) Rai, AlisachinaThe present study entitled Localization of English in Linguistic Landscape in Kathmandu aimed to explore the way to what extent the linguistic landscape express the localization of English in Kathmandu valley. It also investigated the reasons behind the localization of English in commercial billboards. Different materials can be used in linguistics landscape but I used only public signs for consistency. One hundred signs from different commercial places were selected for the analysis of the data. Data were analyzed descriptively and thematically. The result of the study revealed that English language dominates the linguistic landscape of Kathmandu. It has also been found that the landscape of Kathmandu has presence of localized English and it surpasses other national language in the main cities where there is an ethnic majority of indigenous languages. Regarding the reasons behind the localization of linguistic landscapes; market trend, a long-stance practice, random use of English language, modern language, prestige reason, painters as policy planners, eye catchy nature of English language, and convenience for translator have been found as the major ones. The first chapter deals with the introduction of the study consists of background of the study, statement of the problem, objectives of the study, research questions, significance of the study, delimitations of the study, and operational definitions of key terms. References and appendices have been included at the last part of this thesis.Item Tourists' perceptions on linguistic landscape in Kathmandu valley(Department of English Education, 2019) Aryal, RamkrishnaThe study entitled Tourists' Perceptions on Linguistic Landscape in Kathmandu Valley was conducted to explore tourist’s perceptions of LL in Kathmandu valley and to explore about the types of language used in LL. This study was based on an interpretative research design. Interview guidelines and observation checklist were the main tools for data collection. The population of this study consisted of five tourists of Kathmandu valley. They were selected as sample for the study through purposive non-random sampling strategy. Likewise, I observed thirty photos of government and non-government linguistic landscapes from three areas of Kathmandu valley; they were from Thamel, Bagbazar and Durburmarga. The study found that there were altogether seven languages used on the linguistic landscapes of three different areas of Kathmandu districts. Among them English language was given most priority. Likewise, the cases of transliteration, translation and code- mixing were found on linguistic landscape. Furthermore, the study found that tourists had positive views towards linguistic landscape. All the tourists said linguistic landscape helps to get information. LLs can be used to reach their destination and it made them aware about different signs and symbols. This thesis consists of five different chapters. The first chapter consists of background of the study, statement of the problem, objectives of the study research questions, significance of the study, delimitation of the study and operational definition of key terms. Based on the survey, quantitative research design, eighty non-governmental images of the language used in LLs were collected from Kirtipur, Balkhu, Bagbazar, Dillibazar, Jamal and Thamel areas of Kathmandu district. Among eighty LLs as population, forty LLs were selected as a sample for the study using purposive nonrandom sampling strategy. As per the objectives of the study, the checklist was used to analyze the use of language on LLs of advertisement. The data were analyzed and interpreted using simple statistical tools such as frequency and percentile. The study found that there were altogether six languages used on LLs of different areas of Kathmandu district including English, Nepali, Newari, Japanese, Chinese and Korean. The English language was given high priority. The English Language is the most dominant in LLs of Kathmandu district. The vast majority of LL is bilingual while a significant portion is monolingual; the presence of multilingual is relatively rare. Transliteration is used in approximately half of the LLs in the total sample. Translation is used in around one-third of LLs. Code-mixing is used in a significantly low in LLs. This thesis consists of five different chapters. The first chapter consists of a background of the study, statement of the problem, objectives of the study, research questions, significance of the study, delimitations of the study and operational definition of the key terms.
