Item Clash Between Materialism And Spiritualism In Raman Maharshi's Who Am I?(Department of English, 2020-02) Pant, Gaurav ShaliThis research paper investigates the underlying clash between materialism and spiritualism in Raman Maharshi’s Who Am I?As an autobiography by a well known Indian scholar and a sage, it answers to a set of questions on the self- inquiry. Autobiography as such cultivates the ideas and themes bathing from the notion of spiritualism. The researcher, here contemplates into the existing contradictions and limitations of why Raman Maharshi, the author gives much emphasis on the spiritual way of screening the life and universe from Arvind Sharma’s Predetermination and Free Will in the Teachings of Raman Maharshiand J.C. Brand’s The Discovery of the Raman Effect. In doing the research, basically what do I understand; as a researcher is the analyzing the issues related to only one point of view would not do justice rather it will arise further contradictions. This research renders to understand the contradictions and find out the middle paths in between materialism and spiritualism. The middle path generated will particularly solve the riddles seen in the holistic approach to view the life and universe.Item Counterproductive Effect of Modernity in D. H. H. Lawrence’s The White Peacock .Characters like Lettie, George, Leslie and Meg go through transformation of society from rural to urban and agrarian to industrial. This transformation makes them to adapt in new trends of living. Priorities of their life alter which causes them to face emotional breakdown and familial disintegrity as they turn more individualistic, money minded and indifferent towards others. At the center of this crisis there lies industrialization and urbanization which reinforces the issues of individualism and materialism. This research work investigates sordid realities of modern world where people are highly motivated towards prosperity in terms of money and other materials. This research is done under the theoretical light of George Simmel’s idea of money economy and blaze attitude. Modernist thinkers Anthony Giddens and Marshall Berman’s views regarding the impact if modernity are used as additional theoretical insights while dealing with this research work. In short, it depicts an extended reflection upon the dehumanizing effects of modernity and industrialization in peoples’ life and relationship. Lily’s lifestyle is shaped by this materialistic society, and she has adopted expensive habits like gambling, buying expensive clothes and jewelries. Lily depends on her aunt and her friends for her financial and other needs. Lily is able tostick in this society because of her beauty and graceful manners and the possibility of her marriage with a rich person. In this judgmental materialistic society, Lily tries to behave little independently to maintain her financial needs. However, the society misunderstands and misinterprets her actions and accuses her of impropriety. Her close friends and her family members ostracize her at a time when she needs their support. Ostracized from her dream world of high-class society, Lily gradually descends into working class people. Lily finds no purpose in her life and envisages only a long life of poverty and dinginess which she hates. Hari, the central character in the text, is a self-made boy struggling against the capitalistic structure of the Indian society. His never-ending pains make his objectives be gained, and Hari eventually stores happiness in the family despite being attacked by incalculable outer social forces. Along with the tireless attempts of Hari in bettering his family economic condition, his sister, Lila accounts for a lot. Her sacrifice and hard labor have indeed energized Hari much to grow bolder to fight against all obvious factors and to bring about happiness and economic prosperity. After all the courageous children i.e. Hari and Lila prove as the sampling to other Indian working class citizens.
