Item Effectiveness of Collaborative Learning in Mathematics(Department of Mathematics Education, 2016) Poudel, Ishor PrasadThis study is entitled "Effectiveness of Collaborative Learning in Mathematics". The main purpose of this study was to identify the effects of collaborative learning on students’ mathematics achievement and attitudes towards mathematics in selected Gandhi Adarsha secondary school in Bhaktapur District. A total of 40 students of grade nine among them 20 students were experimental and 20 students were in control group participated in this study where experimental design was administered. Data were analyzed and interpreted by using the statistical tools such as Mean, Standard deviations and t-test. Along with the qualitative data the non cognitive part of learning was also noted and analyzed descriptively. The newly developed collaborative learning focuses on students’ interests and their potential to learn the particular subject. This aims on finding out the positivity in students, enabling their past successes and conducting the learning activities for fostering the same. Hence this research tries to discuss about empowering mathematics learning through collaborative ways. And hence, it focus on making proper respect to students’ need and interest upon mathematics learning, the knowledge they possess, the background successes and potentials and conducting learning activities in a similar way. The results showed that collaborative learning had significant effects on mathematics achievement and attitudes towards mathematics. It was found that students’ performance in mathematics and attitudes towards mathematics were affected by exposure to the collaborative learning. The findings of this study have shown a great improvement in mathematics achievement and attitudes towards mathematics. Therefore, collaborative learning can be successfully used to promote student’ performance in mathematics in secondary school.Item Effectiveness of Instructional Materials on Mathematics Achievement of Students(Department of Mathematics Education, 2016) Thapa, BimalIn the educational field in Nepal the teachers and students are facing many problems in teaching learning process. In Algebra, teachers face many problems while giving clear concepts to the students. It is obvious that the use of instructional materials helps the students for better understanding and thus better achievement. Instructional material can be used to facilitate teaching and motivate students for clear instruction. These materials are linked to the sensory organs and they provide the visual and sensory experience to the students. So, the researcher intended to study the effectiveness of instructional materials in teaching algebra at lower secondary level grade VIII with the following objective. 1. To find out the effectiveness of instructional materials in teaching algebra. 2. To compare the achievement of students in algebra taught by using instructional materials and not using instructional materials. The design of this study is pre-test post-test non-equivalent control group design of experiment. In order to fulfill these objectives the researcher selected two schools randomly in Nawalparasi district. From each school 20 students of grade VIII were selected for sample of the study. The experimental and control groups were determined by tossing a coin. Both experimental and control groups were taught by researcher on the topic algebraic expression at grade VIII. The experimental group was taught by using manipulative instructional materials and control group was taught without using these factor kids (i.e. by conventional method). Pre-test was administered before the experiment started. The experiment run for the duration of 20 days. After 20 days post-test was administered on both groups and the mean scores was calculated. The different in mean achievement scores are tested by using t-test at 0.01 level of significance. Same content was taught to both the experimental and control groups from the same curriculum, same textbook prescribed by Government of Nepal. An achievement test paper was the main instrument for data collection for the study. Some questions were developed by researcher himself, some questions were taken from teacher's guide and specification grid of grade VIII which were published from CDC, Sanothimi Bhaktapur. For the pilot study twenty-four items were kept. Finally, the researchers concluded that the achievement of the students of experimental group is better than the achievement of the students of control group. So, algebra teaching by using different manipulative instructional materials causes better achievement than teaching without such instructional materials.Item Factors Affecting Mathematics Achievement of Ethnic Students(Department of Mathematics Education, 2016) Sigdel, PitambarEthnic students in the remote villages of Kathmandu district have little access to education and have difficulty in learning mathematics. This study employed, questionnaire and interview schedule to 60 Ethnic Students of grade IX, their teachers, 20 low achiever Ethnic Students and their parents. Social cognitive theory was applied as the theoretical framework. The objectives of this study are to find out the factors that determined ethnic students mathematical result and to suggest some remedies to reduce affecting factors. The tools for the research were questionnaire and interview from the analysis of collected data. Prior knowledge, favorite subject, presented regularly in math class, no consultation with friends and teachers to learn missed classes subject matter, environment of school, higher education of the subject teacher, Parent’s higher education, inappropriate environment of the family, social belief and tradition, household work load, lack of motivation are the major factors affecting the mathematics achievement of Ethnic Students. To improve the situation, Ethnic students should be motivated to be regular in class. Providing necessary educational material, interaction between their parents and teachers, motivation by parents and teachers, appropriate environment to learn and tuition and extra classes to improve in mathematics are other important steps that would help improve the situation.Item Factors Influencing Mathematics Achievement: A Case of Pahari Students(Department of Mathematics Education, 2019) Adhikari, Hari PrasadThe topic of this study is “Factors Influencing Mathematics Achievement: A Case of Pahari Students”. This is a case study, which is qualitative and descriptive in nature. The objectives of this study were to analyze the factors that affect the mathematics achievement of Pahari students and to dig out the strategies used by school to improve mathematics achievement for Pahari students at Basic Level. The researcher selected six Paharistudents (three boys and three girls) for the case respondents from grade VIII of the Shree Arunodaya Secondary School Simthali-2, Kavrepalanchok district purposively for this study. The researcher used interview schedule, observation note and related documents as tools for data collection. The interviews were conducted with case Pahari students, their parents, pre- math teacher and head teacher about their experience, opinions, feelings and knowledge for collecting necessary data. Those collected information were analyzed on the basis of conceptual framework and data were validated and supported by the social constructivist theory and empirical review. Findings of this study arethe economic condition of Pahari parents found very poor and illiterate. They use their children as a means of earning support. So the Pahari students do not get opportunity to learn mathematics at home and school. The school environment is not good for teaching learning activities. The school has not conducted any suitable strategies to improve mathematics achievement of Pahari students. This study concluded that home environment, school environment, parent's education and occupation, interest of learner, teacher and student relation and assessment technique are the main factors influencing mathematics achievement of Pahari students.Item Parent’s Profession and Mathematics Achievement of Basic Education Level Students(Department of Mathematics Education, 2019) Mahato, PashupatiThe aim of this research was to explore the parent’s profession and mathematics achievement of basic education level student. It had also aim to figure out how the parent’s profession and their involvement influence in student in the learning mathematics. This research was conducted in Rautahat district. This study was based on survey design. To obtain the objective of this study, eight school were selected randomly for data collection. Questionnaire were developed for parents and student to collect the data. Eighty students and eighty parents were divided into four groups according to their parent’s profession with the help of student and their class teacher. Twenty students were selected in each group by random sampling method to make sample size equal. The profession of parents were divided into jobholder, businessman, farmer and other-parents. Achievement score of the student were collected from the school record and analyzed by using ANOVA and t-test method to find whether the achievements of each group of students were different or not. Questionnaire were asked with student and their parents and then data was analyzed by using thematic analysis to find how the parent’s profession and their involvement influence in student. The result shows that there was significance difference in mathematics learning of student according to the parent’s profession. Also, parents who appreciate their children needs have significant impact on children performance while family income has highly significant impact on student learning. This study shows that parent’s profession status plays an important role in child development. Parents with good profession status provide better facilities to their children, and gets better academic in performance of mathematics learning.
