Item The Effectiveness of Discovery Technique in Teaching of the Grammatical Functions(Department of English Education, 2007) Bohara, Lal BahadurThis study was conducted to examine the Effectiveness ofDiscovery Technique in Teaching of the grammatical functions. Theselected objectives were as follows: (i) To determine the effectiveness ofdiscovery technique in teaching of the grammatical functionsand (ii) Tosuggest some pedagogical implications on the finding of the study. This study was conducted in Sanothimi Education campus,Bhaktapur. The students of B.Ed. first yearmajoringEnglish were takenas thesampleof the study. The selected students were divided into twogroups:experimental and control, on the basis of the pre-test result withodd-even ranking. To collect data the researcher taught both the groups upto twentyregular running classes. The experimental group was taught by usingdiscovery technique whereas control group by usingusual classroomteaching. What he did was, used different lessonplansand materials forboth the groups while teaching. After the completion of the classroom teaching a post test wastaken and then obtained marks of both the testswerecompared to eachother to determine the effectiveness of discovery technique in teachingthe given topic. From this study, it was found that the discovery techniquewasmore effective than usual classroom teaching while teaching thegrammaticalfunctions. The study consists offourchapters which are given below:Chapter one consists of a brief introductoryof related area of thestudy. It includesobjectives,significanceof the study and definition ofspecific terms. Chapter two deals with the methodological procedures appliedduring the study. Chapter three consists of analysis and interpretation of the data.The data were analyzed and interpreted on the basis of the differencebetween the average scores (in percentage) of each group in the pre-testand post-test. Chapter four deals with the findings and recommendations of thestudy.Item English and Dumi Rai Kinship Terms: A comparative Study(Department of English Education, 2007) Rai, SabitaThis thesis entitled “English and Dumi Rai Kinship Terms: A Comparative Study”has been carried out to compare English and DumiRai kinship terms of both consanguineal and a ffinal types from the perspectives of both male and female ego. To accomplish the objectives of the study the researcher collected dumi kinship terms from Dumi native speakers using oral-structured interview which were selected through snowball sampling procedure but English kinship terms were taken from secondary sources of data. The major findings of the study are: In English, kinsmen are addressed by the name inmost of the cases but in Dumi, kinsmen are addressed by the certain terms,so the number of kinship terms is greater in Dumi than in English. Similarly,in English, there is no any distinction between elder and younger kinship relations where as there is distinction between elder and younger. This thesis comprises four chapters. The first chapter includes general background, review of the related literature, objectives of the study,significance of the study, and definition of various kinship terms. Similarly,the second chapter deals with sources of data, sample of the study, tools for data collection, process of data collection, and limitations of the study. The third chapter comprises the analysis and interpretation of collected data and the fourth chapter deals with findings and recommendations of the study.Item Forms of Address of the Chepang and English Languages: A Comparative Study(Department of English Education, 2007) Paudel, SrijanaThe present study "Forms of Address of the Chepang and English Languages:A Comparative Study" attempts to compare and contrast the forms of addressused in the Chepang and English languages. It shows how native speakers used thewords to address somebody in speech, keeping in mind various factors like age,sex, relation, social setting, culture related to addressors and addressees. Thisresearch compares the forms of address used for consanguineal relations, affinalrelations and social relations including strangers, friends, teachers and students,people holding political, judicial and other positions, professionals like officers,doctors, nurses, drivers and other persons in the Chepang community. To carry out this research, both primary and secondary sources of data have beenutilized. The sample population consisted of forty-five native speakers of theChepang language spoken in Makwanpur district. Data for the English languagehad been taken from secondary sources i.e. English forms of address, differentbooks, journals, research report (References 57-59). A set of questionnaire wasused to collect the data. The way of addressing people in two languages differ in most cases. Usually,kinship terms can have addressee use in the Chepang but first name is moreprominent in the English language. The researcher found out that the Chepanglanguage is richer in the forms of address compared to English. The thesis spreads into 4 Chapters. Chapter one deals with general background inwhich language has been defined, linguistic situation of Nepal, introduction ofChepang, their origin, their language, review of related literature, objectives of thestudy, significance of the study and definition of specific terms. Chapter two isrelated to the methodology, which deals withsources of data, population of thestudy, sampling procedure and tools for data collection, process of data collectionand limitation of the study. Chapter three deals with analysis and interpretation ofthe data. It compare and contrast the two languagesi.e. English and the Chepang.The fourth chapter presents the findings and recommendation and somesuggestions.Item Identification and Formation of Major Word Classes: A Case of Higher Secondary Level Students(Department of English Education, 2007) Giri, Harka LalThis research study attempts to analyse the ability in identifying andforming major word classes of the Higher Secondary level students. For the study,48 students from six higher secondary schools studying in Grade twelve ofEducation stream were selected. A test was administered to them in order tocollect the required data. Thedata were analyzed and their ability was determined. This study consists of four chapters. The first chapter introduces the studyin terms of general background, literature review, objectives of the study,significance of the study and definitions of the specific term. The second chapter gives an account of the methodology applied to carryout the research work. Mainly, sources of data (primary and secondary),population of the study, sample population, sample procedure, tools of datacollection, process of data collection and limitations of the study are explainedunder the second chapter 'Methodology'. The third chapter deals with the analysis, interpretation and presentation ofthe data. The marks obtained by the students are analyzed to find out their ability.Moreover, the data are analyzed in terms of sex, item, word class, school anddistrict. Tables, charts, graphs and some common statistical tools are alsoincluded. Bhadra, 2064 Harka Lal GiriItem Passivization in English and Hindi(Department of English Education, 2009) Mahara, Arbind KumarThe thesis Entitled Passivization in English and Hindi is an attempt to compare the passivization system between the English and Hindi languages and to suggest some pedagogical implications. The sample population consists of90 Hindi speakers of Siraha district who have Hindi as a mother tongue.They were selected by random sampling procedure and the researcher had used only one type of research tool i.e. questionnaire to collect the data.After collecting data it was analyzed,interpreted and presented descriptively and comparatively with the help of tables,diagrams and illustrations.The overall study shows that the syntactic position of noun and pronoun as subject and object remain intactin Hindi while changing active sentence into passive sentence whereas the syntactic position of noun and pronouns as subject and object are changed in English.This study shows that Hindi and English are similar in a few as pectsbut different in many aspects in the processes of passivization.There are twotypes of voice in the Hindi Language (Kartri Bachya and Aakartri Bachya). Aakirtri Bachya has classified into two types i.e. (KarmaBachya and BhawaBachya). English has only two types of voices i.e. (Active and passive voice). This thesis contains four chapters.Chapter one deals with the introduction which contains general background,the linguistic situation in Nepal,the Hindi language,transformation,passivization,CA and literature review. It also includes the objectives and significance of the study.Chapter two consists of methodology adopted during the study with the tools and process of data.It includes the limitations of the study as well.Chapter three deals with the analysis and interpretation of the collected data. The collected data are analyzed and interpreted comparatively in detail and chapter four contains the summary of the findings and recommendations of the study.Item Pronominals in English and Doteli Dialect of Nepali(Department of English Language Education, 2006) Rosyara, Maya KumariThis thesis entitled ‘Pronominal in English and Doteli Dialect of Nepali language’ endeavors to compare and contrast pronominal systems ofEnglish and Doteli dialect of Nepali language. The researcher collecteddata from both primary and secondary sources. The primary sources ofthe data are native speakers of Doteli dialect from Jijodamandu and Latamandu VDCs and the secondary sources are different books, journalsand theses. This research hasbeen based on the fifty informants 25 from Jijodamandu and 25 from Latamandu VDCs. The researcher used the judgmental sampling. The interview was used as research tool for data collection. Among the informants, 25 were from Latamandu and 25 werefrom jijodamandu. The researcher used the stratified random samplingprocedure to sample the population. The interview was used as a researchtool for data collection. With the help of analysis and interpretation of thedata provided by informants, some findings were found which are givenin brief; Doteli has more number of pronouns in comparison to Englishand; personal reflexive and possessive pronouns are categorized underthree categorizes: 1 st , 2 nd and 3 rd person in both languages; Doteli has theexi stence of honorific and non-honorific pronouns for the first personal,reflexive and possessive which don’t exist in English language; Dotelihas more number second person personal pronouns than English;English third person singular possessive pronouns are used distinctively for maleand female but there is no separate pronouns for male and female inDoteli third person singular possessive pronouns; Doteli has differentrelative pronouns for singular and plural where as in English the sameform is used for both singular and plural; English has the same form for interrogative and relative pronoun but Doteli has different form for interrogative and relative pronoun. The thesis consists of three chapters. They are introduction, methodology, analysis and interpretations and findings and recommendations. Chapter one encompasses general background, review of the related literature, objective of the study, significance of the study and definition of specific terms. Chapter two deals with methodology. It encompasses sources of data,sampling procedure, research tools, and process of data collection and limitation of the study. Chapter three is very important which includes the analysis and interpretation of the data. Chapter four incorporates findings, recommendations and pedagogical implications of the study.
