Item A Comparative Study on Reading Comprehension of Grade Eight Students of Kathmandu and Chitwan districts(Department of English Education, 2007) Adhikari, ShantiThis research work attempts to compare the reading comprehension ofthe Grade Eight Studentsof Kathmandu and Chitwan districtsin a variety oftextsin terms of different variables. Altogether ten schools were selected representing private andpublicschools of Kathmandu and Chitwan districts. Ten students were selectedbyrandom sampling procedure from each of selected schools as a samplepopulation for this study. Four unseen texts were extracted from differentbooks and newspaper and both subjective and objective tests were constructedto test reading comprehension of the eighth graders. First pilot test wasconducted to find out the appropriateness of the test. The test was administeredona sample population. This study found out that thestudents studying in grade eight from theschools of Kathmandu andChitwan districts obtained 80.93 % and 80.43%respectively in total texts. This shows that there is no significant differencebetweenthe performance of the students of Kathmandu and Chitwan. In otherwords, they have same abilityto comprehendthereading texts. Theboys of Chitwan have slightly higher level comprehension skillthan the boys of Kathmandu, their scores being 83.60% and 82.13%respectively. The girls of Kathmandu have bettercomprehension skill than thegirls of Chitwan. Their scores being 79.57% and 77.20% respectively. The level of performance of the students of private schools ofKathmandu is higher than the performance of the students of private schools ofChitwan, their scores being 91.05% and 89.55% respectively. The level ofperformance of the students of publicschools of Kathmandu and Chitwan issame, their scores being 74.13% and 74.31%respectively.The students of Kathmandu and Chitwan have same comprehensionskill in poem and descriptive passage and the students of Kathmandu havegood comprehension skill in reading dialogue than the students of Chitwan. This research study consists of four chapters: Introduction,Methodology, Analysis and Interpretation and Findings andRecommendations. The first chapter contains general background, importanceof reading, what is reading comprehension, components of reading skills,testing reading comprehension, review of related literature, objectives of thestudy, significance of the study, definition of the terms. Similarly, the second chapter contains methodology, population of thestudy, tools for data collection, pilot study, the process of data collection andlimitation of the study. The third chapter deals with the analysis and interpretation of dataobtained. The marks obtained by the students have been analysed to find outtheir reading comprehension ability. Some statistical tools such as average andpercentile have been used to analyse the marks obtained by the students.Finally, the reading comprehension ability of the students of grader VIII fromprivate and public schools have been compared on the basis of the marksobtained. Finally, the fourth chapter consists of findings and recommendations ofthe study. References and appendices are presented at the end of the chapter.Item Reading Comprehension of Grade Ten Students(Department of English Education, 2009) Kattel, Gopal ChandraThis study has been carried out as an attempt to find out the exact readingComprehension of the grade ten students of Sindhupalchok District. For thestudy, 5 higher secondary schools of different locations were selected. Carefulattention was paid to select the schools. The students of grade 10 in theacademic year 2065 formed the population of the study. In the research, thetool consisted of only objective and short answer questions. The text includedin the test was an unseen passage. The studywas carried out to a samplepopulation of 100 students of grade ten. The researcher selected 20 studentswith equal number of boys and girls from each of the five schools by stratifiedrandom sampling method. The average reading comprehension of the gradetenstudents was satisfactory as they could comprehend 38.65 percentage. Anotherinteresting fact found out was that the Nepalese male students are better readersthan the female students by 1.5 percent more. The study consists of fourchapters and each chapter presents an account of the study from different sidesof the study. The first chapter of the study under the heading 'Introduction' incorporatesGeneral Background, Use of Reading Skills in Language Learning, Reading inthe ELT Context of Nepal, Significance and Objective of the Study, LiteratureReview and Definitions of Terms.The second chapter deals with themethodology adopted to carryout the research work which includes Sources ofData, Population of the Study and The School Sample, Process ofDataCollection, and Limitations of the Study. In the third chapter analysis andinterpretation of the collected data has been made in detail. For objectivity andaccuracy of the data analysis, statistical tools like percentage, median, standarddeviation, mode and average have been brought into practice. The fourthchapter of the study presents the findings obtained through the analysis of dataand some recommendations have been made with the hope that they will be ofvalue to pedagogical implication. The respondents for the research wereselected byusing the purposive non-random sampling procedure. For the research study,the primary data were collected from the fifteen English teachers teaching indifferent secondary level schools in Kathmandu Valley. For the purpose of datacollection questionnaire, interview and class observation were used. Thecollected data from the respondents wereanalyzed andinterpreteddescriptively. The major findings of this study shows thatthe majority of therespondentsperceive teaching reading as a means to develop the language ofthe learners. It wasimportant to teach a reading text in a language classroom asthe students get the gist and message of the text after reading it. The mainpurpose of teaching areading text in the classroom was to make the studentsindependent readers who can tackle any kind of problems in the absence of theteacher which becomes beneficial in their practical life. The teachers useddifferent techniques in their classroom to make their students understand whileteaching reading skill. They had drawnthe attention of the students towardsthem in pre-reading stage using some signpost questions. In while-readingstage, the students weregiven enough opportunity to read the text and get themain information from it. The teachers involvedtheir students in group work,assignedsome tasks and askedto come withits product which finally helpedthem to develop their English language. In the final stage, the teachersorganizedquestion-answer session to know the students’ understanding.Themajority ofteachersplayedthe role of the facilitator in their classroom. Theycreatedfriendly environment while delivering their lessons. Theyinvolvedtheir students in different communicative activities and elicitedtheir responsesto develop the communicative competence of the students. x This thesis has been divided into five different chapters. The firstchapter dealswith general background of the study, statement of the problem, rationale of thestudy, objectives, significance, delimitations of the study and operationaldefinitation of the key terms. Similarly, the second chapter consists of thereview of the related theoretical literature, review of the related empiricalliterature, implications of the review for the study and conceptual frameworks.The third chapter deals with the methodological aspects under which design ofthe study, population and sample, sampling procedures, data collection tools,data collection procedure and data analysis and interpretation procedures havebeen included. The fourth chapter focuses on the results and discussions of thedata in greater detail. As the fifth chapter ofthe study, it consists of summary,conclusions and implications of the study in policy making level, practice leveland for the further research. The four sample questionnaires responded by theparticipants and one questionnaire used in the study have been included inappendix. References and appendices form the concluding part of this thesis.
