Item Proficiency in The Use of Phrasal Verbs :A Case of Grade Nine Students(Central Departmental of English Education, 2011) Pandey, DurgaThis thesis entitled ‘Proficiency in theUseof Phrasal Verbs: ACaseofGradeNine Students’wasan attempt to findout theproficiencyonphrasal verbs. Forthis purpose,I used both primary andsecondary sources of data. The primary datawere obtained from the students studying ingradenine of the selected schoolsofKathmandu valley. The English textbook of Grade nine was the mainsource ofsecondary data. The phrasal verbs were taken from this English textbook to designtest items. The researcheradministeredthe testto60students from the selectedschools. Then analyzed the correct responses as well as compared their status ofproficiency on the basis of the percentage of correct responses.It was found thatthe proficiency of the phrasal verbs of the ninthgradersstudying in Kathmanduvalley was satisfactory. Students of private schoolwere found to besomehowbetterin comparison to the students of government-aidedschools. The study isdivided into four chapters. The first chapter deals with the generalbackground, introductiontophrasalverbs,difficulties while learningphrasalverbs, importance of phrasal verbs, reviewof the related literature, objectivesandsignificance ofthe study. The second chapter consists of the methodology inwhich the sources of data, sampling procedure, tools for data collection, process ofdata collection and limitationsof the study are mentioned.Similarly, the thirdchapter comprisesanalysis and interpretation of the data. Finally, the fourthchapter containsthe findings and recommendationsof the study.
