It was based on primary data collected in May, 2006. The main objective of the study is to find out the domestic violence against women in Birendranagar Surkhet and the specific objectives are; to examine the socio- demographic backgrounds of the respondents, to explore types and reason of domestic violence against women, to assess the knowledge and awareness of women on domestic violence, to identify the situation of the sharing and reporting behavior of domestic violence cases. For the purpose of the study, the researcher had applied the social science research methodology. The study was held on both exploratory and descriptive research design. The sources of data were both primary and secondary and the natures of data were both secondary were both qualitative and quantitative. It is not possible to take all so out of them 40 HH were selected on a sample random basis for the study. The study was done on victim, adolescent girls and general women to know the domestic violence situation in Biendranagar, Surkhet. From the study It was concluded that their knowledge on violence against girls and women is quite satisfactory but when it comes to reporting behavior, it is very low and unsatisfactory. The social structure of our country forces them to be shy and tolerant. Their tolerance, their depressed feelings and lack of confidence within themselves encourage the perpetrators who always eager to violate them. The problem of domestic violence against women has grown so terribly huge and has rooted up to the depth of this society that to prevent easily in just a click remains a fantasy. Majority of the cases are related with beating, battering, punish their spouse by drinking alcohol, child marriage/ polygamy are the major causes of domestic violence in that area that causes domestic violence. So, efforts should be done from the basic level by educating every people and make them aware. Slow, careful and effective efforts should be made first in household level, then in the society and then in the national level to gain a satisfactory progress against the domestic violence cases. Domestic Violence is wide spread problem in Birendranagar Surkhet. Cultural, Economical and religious factors reinforce male dominance and female subservience so thoroughly that neither the domestic violence nor the failures to complain about it are unusual. By law, men inherit and control most property with the concomitant responsibility to support parents, wives and children. Women’s dependency is reinforced in law, religion and cultural norms. Moreover, grinding poverty, lack of jobs and alcohol abuse feed the opportunities for violence inherent in the dependency relationship.Item Practices of witch accusation in Tamang community in Kavrepalanchok District(Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Sociology, 2024) Zoowa, Sabin BahadurAll past research on witchcraft accusations has claimed that it is a form of violence against women and considered it a social problem, but its social causes and existence in human society have not been well explored. To address these shortcomings in past research, this dissertation seeks to explore the reasons for the social structure and construction of witchcraft. This is probably the first study on witch allegations that seeks it from a socially constructive perspective, and it also helps to raise awareness and draw the attention of all concerned in this regard. The main purpose of this study was to identify the socially perceived attributes and factors associated with witch allegations that are mostly prevalent among women in the Tamang community in the Kavrepalanchok district.A qualitative research approach was adopted that helped in acquiring knowledge, attitude, and practice regarding this complex phenomenon to a greater extent. This dissertation studied fifteen incidences of witch allegations in the Kavrepalanchok district and triangulated the findings with each other. The victim, perpetrator, and witch doctor are the primary informants of the study. Some sociological concepts, such as the social construction of reality, social theory and social structure, theories of social facts, and theories of gender inequalities, were used. Unlike these concepts, the explanation of witchcraft presented by the social anthropologist Evans Pritchard was also used in some ways, where he argued that the witch accusation cannot be understood without the social context and its social function. The findings indicated that most of the factors leading to an allegation of a witch in Tamangs are present at their social and structural levels; they are social structure, social network, power, and gender role. Therefore, this dissertation has succeeded in uncovering such hidden social forces related to witch accusations, such as emphasizing that this accusation of a witch is just a myth in the minds of the people. Finally, this dissertation would be a new milestone that helps in bringing knowledge of social reality and the social function of witches. Therefore, this dissertation would be of great significance to the future researcher who wishes to research this subject matter. In the context of Nepal, it certainly helps to reduce the incidence of witch accusations, whereas the international community will be compelled to reflect on it. Along with this, it could be further helpful and valuable to interested NGOs, INGOs, governments, and individuals to plan and implement programs to reduce witch accusations in all parts of the country.
