Item Clause Combining in Baram and English: A Comparative Study(Department of English Education, 2007) Chalise, LaxmanThe research is basically a study of ‘Clause combining’ in the Baram andEnglish, a comparative study. The main objectives of the study are to find out theprocess of clause combining in the Baram language, to compare and contrast withthose of English, and to record the English clause system. The sample populationconsists of 30 Baram people, regardless who know and do not know their own nativelanguage to find out the competent speaker of the language. The research is limited innon-dialectical variation. Quota sampling procedure is the way to select the Barampeople. Two types of research tool i.e. questionnaire and interview schedule are used. In Baram there are their own subordinators and coordinators. However,someboth coordinators and subordinators seem to have been borrowed from Nepali. Thesignificant rules of clause combining in the Baram language is the nominalization ofthe verb of dependent clause. It consists of all together four chapters. Chapter one deals with theintroduction. It consists of the background of the study, the Baram language, Barampeople, sociolinguistic situation, how Baram is getting endangered, a brief sketch ofclause system in Baram brief sketch of clause system in English. It also includesliterature review, objectives of the study and the significance of the study. Chapter two includes the methodology adopted for the study with the toolsandprocess of data collection. The research consists of thirty Baram people selectedthrough quota sampling procedure. The research is based on both primary andsecondary sources of data. The third chapter deals with analysis and interpretation of the obtained data. Thedata are analyzed and compared descriptively with the help of tables, illustrations anddiagrams. The researcher has also presented the rules of clause combining in Baramand compared themwith those to English. The researcher has also listed somesimilarities and differences between English and Baram language. The fourth chapter presents the findingsandrecommendations of the study.Item English and Nepali Code – Mixing in Limbu Folk Song Palam(Faculty of English Education, 2012) Limbu, Yagya BahadurThis research entitled 'English and Nepali Code-Mixing in Limbu Folk Songs Palam' aims to analyze English and Nepali expressions mixed in Limbu folk songs Palam. The main objectives of this study are to find out and analyze English and Nepali code mixing in terms of word classes (Noun, Verb, Adjective and Adverb), to find out contexts in which code mixing takes place and to compare the frequency of occurrence of English and Nepali code mixing in the sampled twenty four Palams. The primary sources of this study were different Palam singers and the secondary sources were different Limbu folk songs Palam published in the public and different magazines and books related to Palam. The researcher used judgmental sampling procedure for collecting data. The findings of the study show that Nepali code mixing occurs in a greater number than English code mixing in the sampled twenty four Palams. The findings, further, reveal that out of different English and Nepali expressions, words are mixed maximally in the selected twenty four Palams. Within words, noun and adjectives are found in the first and second position of occurrence respectively. There are no verbs and adverbs in English expression. The verbs in Nepali expression is in the least number of the Nepali word class. Regarding contexts, English and Nepali code mixing in the Palams are found in the terms of education, science, transportation, sense of love and affection and so on. The research consists of four chapters. Chapter one deals with general background, linguistic scenario of Nepal, introduction to Limbu language, reasons of code-mixing, review of related literature, objectives of the study and the significance of the study. Chapter two relates with methodology which deals with sources of data, population of the study, sampling procedure, tools for data collection, process of data collection and limitation of the study. Finally the fourth chapter deals with the findings, recommendation and pedagogical implications of this studyItem Mode of Communication in the Novel 'To Kill A Mockingbird'(Department of English Education, 2012) Bhusal, Yam KalaThe present study entitled 'Mode of Communication in the Novel 'To kill a mockingbird' aimed to find out the mode of communication and the forms of spoken discourse in the written text by female White American and Black American characters in the novel in the 1960s. The extracted text data is that of both adult and child female characters. With the help of a check list the text extracts were analyzed to identify the sociolinguistic aspects of the written discourse and the form and styles of speaking. The research study was based on library research and the study followed the norms of Qualitative method of data in the form of 'quotes' extracted purposively after reading the novel thoroughly two times. After analyzing the text extracts it was found that the communication style of the female characters differed. Black Americans' style of communicating and the white Americans' style of communication differed. The mode of communication was influenced by the context and also by the child female character and the adult female character discourse. This study consists of four chapters. Chapter one deals with general background,review of related literature, objectives and significance of the study, Chapter two includes methodology of the study. Sources of data, sampling procedure, tools for data collection, process of data collection and limitations of the study were the components of this chapter. Chapter three consists of analysis and interpretation of the collected data. Chapter four discusses the findings and recommendations based on the analysis and interpretation of the data followed by references and appendices.Item Negative and Interrogative Transformations in the English and Magar Languages: A Comparative Study(Department of English Education, 2007) Raika, DilipThe dissertaton entitled ‘NEGATIVE AND INTERROGATIVETRANSFORMATIONS IN THE ENGLISH AND MAGAR LANGUAGES: ACOMPARITIVE STUDY’ is an attempt to identify the processes of negative andinterrogative transformations in the Magar language and to compare and contrastthem with those in English. The researcher collected data from both primary andsecondary sources. The sample population of the study consisted of 60 Magarnative speakers. He took structured interview to collect primary data. The major findings in a nutshell are: The negative marker in Magar is 'mā-'which is placed before the main verb in most of the cases whereas the negativemarker in English is ‘not’ or ‘n’t’ which is placed after an auxiliary verb; Magaryes/no question is formed by using rising intonation whereas English yes/ noquestion is formed by placing the auxiliary verb at the beginning or the sentence;Magar wh-word in most of the cases occur after the subject whereas English wh-world occurs at the beginning of sentence. The dissertation consists of four chapters. Chapter one deals withintroduction. It consists of general background, review of the related literatures,objectives of the study, significance of the study and definitions of the specificterms. Chapter two deals with methodology. It in compasses sources of data,population of the study, sampling procedure, research tools, processes of datacollection and limitations of the study. Chapter four encompasses findings, recommendations and pedagogicalimplications.Item Pronominal in Rajbangsi and English(Faculty of English Education, 2010) Thapa, SabitriThis present work contains the contrastive analysis of Rajbangsi and English pronominal systems. The languages corpus of English are collected from the secondary sources, whereas Rajbangsi pronominal corpus are collected from Charpane of Jhapa. Direct observation and interviews have been the sources of collecting language corpus. Secondary sources have been used to get some information of Rajbangsi people and their language. The findings show that English lacks honorificity in pronouns, whereas Rajbangsi lacks indefinite pronouns. In other contexts, systems of pronominal markings are different. English lacks ergative markers, whereas it exists in Rajbangsi. First chapter deals with Introduction that mainly consists of general background, Rajbangsi people, Rajbangsi and English, literature review, objectives of the study, significance of the study and hypothesis of the study. Second chapter contains methodology, whereas chapter three deals with analysis and interpretation. Findings and recommendations are included in Chapter four, which is followed by references and appendices.
