While doing it, the researcher has incorporated the theoretical insights of ‘working through’ by Dominick LaCapra from the field of Trauma theory and the philosophical ideas of Levinas’ ethical humanism in order to strengthen the major argument to its fullest logic. Nathaniel, the protagonist of this novel, represents the distressing life experience of Ondaatje. This study critically examines the politics of author’s memory, which appears in the novel through the narratives of Nathaniel. As the survivor of the World War II, Ondaatje uses Nathaniel as his alter ego to deal with his traumatic experiences. Because the narrative or the memory of the survivor of the traumatic event is guided by the novelist’s ideology, Warlight is mostly taken up by psychological observations that are clearly in the author’s rather than the narrator’s voice. While doing it, the researcher has incorporated the theoretical insights of ‘working through’ by Dominick LaCapra from the field of Trauma theory. This novel is characterized by death, loss, departure as well as lies that haunt him repeatedly at present, leading him to trauma. This enduring effects of trauma on the life of author, leads him to articulation. In order to get rid of the trauma, he engages himself in narrating his experiences through fictional character. In this regard, the temporal gap plays a significant role for narrating traumatic experiences of victim. This qualitative study claims that Warlightis actually the story of Ondaatje rather than Nathaniel. Ondaatje tries to release his atrocious experience with the help of temporal gaps. This study aims to explore trauma, testimony and witnessing as depicted in Pat Barker’s Regeneration (1991). This novel deals with historical atrocities of the First World War. The novelist wrote this novel from a belated position trying to understand, to comprehend and to mediate a memory which had no direct experience. The novel is framed by the intention of bearing witness as a writer and to use fictions as a means to create and transmit knowledge of genocide. The present research work makes a modest investigation into the ethical role of memorization through the means of trauma narrative in Pat Barker’s Regeneration and argues that the fictional way of memorizing the violent historical trauma of World War I. It further explores that Barker’s intention of bearing witness as a writer holds the ethical value for her fictional narratives of memory creates and transmits the knowledge of genocide. Likewise, it investigates the therapeutic elements, by bringing the insights from Julia Watson, Scriptotherapy, in the novel. It argues that Regeneration is a book that inscribes scriptotherapy and offers the possibility of healing both to the author and her audience. In doing so, the research incorporates the theoretical insights from Avishai Margalit’s The Ethics of Memory in order to strengthen the major argument. It also includes the theoretical ideas of trauma theory by Dominick LaCapra to discuss on the importance of trauma narrative as a tool for 'working through' and bearing the witness to trauma. In this way, act of memory contains the ethical responsibility that will contribute to the domain of knowledge in the field of traumatic memory.Item Working Through the Trauma in the John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars(Department of English, 2017) Gurung, Ek KumariThis thesis examines the traumatic experiences of the characters and the ways they respond to it in John Green’s novel The Fault in Our Stars.
