Item An Analysis of New Headway Intermediate Students’ Book Prescribed for PCL 1ST Year(Department of English Education, 2007) Dawadi, RajendraThis research was carried out to analyze the English textbook.‘New Headway’ for PCL 1 st year.For this, the textbook was analyzed interms of its physical and academic aspects. In the process of this study,the researcher collected data from both sources: primary and secondary.The primary sources of data were the responses made by the Englishteachers and students who had just completed this book and theresearchers. The secondary sources of data were the textbook itself, different theses in department, other books and journals related to the topic. In order to collect the data, two sets of questionnaire were prepared for theteachers and students. Apart from this, the researcher, himself studied thetextbook in great detail and two units of the textbook were randomlyselected and the analysis was made on the basis of the theoreticalframework fortextbook evaluation. The obtained data were tabulated andanalyzed using a simple statistical tool. The findings of the study are based on teachers’ perceptionsstudents’ perceptions and researcher’s own views on the textbook. Themain findings of this study are as follows: i. The textbook is appropriate in size and convenient forhandling and carrying for the students. ii. The textbook contains communicative activities.iii. The content items of the textbook are interesting because they introduce foreign culture to the students.iv. The researcher found very poor and faulty strategies being used by the English language teachers. The strategies used by them were not in line with the 'Teaching stages' sufficiently. Therefore, it was found that the teachers have no clear idea about 'How to teach poetry following the stages'. The teachers were facing many problems while teaching poetry like teaching the poetry of different socio-cultural background, translating, taking interest by very few learners and so on. Despite these difficulties, teaching poetry makes much relevance in language learning. They are: poetry helps to develop language skills and aspects. Moreover, It motivates the students,gives pleasure, and develops creativity and vocabulary power and so on. The thesis is divided into four major chapters. The first chapter deals with a short introduction of English language in general, literature, values of literature, poetry and its types, objectives, strategies of teaching poetry a thigher secondary level, objectives and significance of the study and review of related literature. The second chapter is concerned with the methodology used to carryout this research work. To collect the data, both primary and secondary sources have been used. Primary sources are questionnaire to the students,questionnaire and interview schedule to the English language teachers and class observation of the teachers. Seven English language teachers and ten students from each higher secondary school, altogether seventy from Udayapur district are the sampling population. 8 Chapter three consists of the analysis and interpretation. The analysis was done in three sections. Section A deals with the analysis of collected data in terms of strategies, section B deals with the analysis of collected data in terms of problems and the section C deals with the analysis of collected data in terms of relevance. The fourth chapter is related to the summary, findings and recommendations. At last some recommendations are made for the improvement of the teaching poetry at higher secondary level.
