Item Investigating Reading Comprehension of Nepali and Tharu Native Speakers(Department of English Education, 2008) Nepal, Om PrasadThe present study "Investigating Reading Comprehension of Nepali and Tharu Native Speakers" aims at determining the level of reading comprehension of Nepali and Tharu native speakers and comparing their ability to comprehend English texts. The study involved the students studying at grade twelve in Rupandehi district for getting data. To fulfil the objectives, the researcher collected data from five higher secondary schools in Rupandehi district. The sample population consisted of 80 students and they were selected by using judgemental non-random sampling. A test paper based on reading comprehension was prepared and administered to the students. Before administering the test, a pilot test was done for the validity and reliability of the test paper. The analysis of the data was done using some statistical processing as percentage, mean, standard deviation and t-test. The level of reading comprehension of Nepali and Tharu native speakers was determined and compared whether or not the difference was significant. It was found that Nepali native speakers were significantly better than Tharu native speakers in reading English texts. This thesis consists of four chapters. Chapter one deals with the general background of the study. It includes the importance of English language, brief introduction of Nepali and Tharu language, brief introduction of language proficiency and proficiency test, brief introduction of language testing and testing reading comprehension, a brief account of reading skill and reading comprehension and relation between proficiency and error. It also consists of literature review, objectives of the study, significance of the study and definition of specific terms. Chapter two deals with the methodology adopted during the study. It includes the sources of data, sample of the study, sampling procedure, tools for data collection, pilot-test, process of data collection and limitations of the study. Chapter three deals with the analysis and interpretation of the data obtained using statistical tools. The data was analyzed on the basis of native speakers, gender and texts. Chapter four deals with the findings and recommendations of the study.Item Reading Comprehension Ability of Primary Level English Teachers(Department of English Education, 2010) Bhandari, RamjiThis research attempts to find out the reading comprehension ability of primary level English teachers and to compare their ability in terms of experience and training. For this purpose the researcher selected the primary level English teachers of Chitwan district. The researcher collected data from the sampled population of 50 primary teachers. The primary level English teachers were given three sets of test. All of them included subjective and objective tests. They were given the test in their own schools. Their responses were administered classifying into trained and untrained and experienced and inexperienced. Their scores were tabulated on the basis of the test items and were analyzed in terms of mean and difference in percentage. Their answers were also analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. This study found out that teachers training and experience affect their performance in reading comprehension. The trained teachers were better than untrained ones. Similarly the experienced teachers obtained marks more than those of inexperienced as a whole. Likewise, they performed better in objective test than in subjective test. All of them had some weaknesses and produced more or less erroneous constructions. The constructions of untrained and inexperienced teachers were more problematic as well as erroneous than those of the trained and experienced teachers. This study consists of four chapters. The chapter one presents general background, review of related literature, objectives of the study and significance of the study. Chapter two consists of the methodology of the study. It includes the sources of data, population of the study, sampling procedure, and tools for data collection, procedure of data collection and limitations of the study. Chapter three consists of the analysis and interpretation of the collected data. The data were tabulated and analyzed on the basis of the test items. Chapter four presents the major findings, recommendations and pedagogical implications of the study.Item " Reading Comprehension of the Students of Janabadi Model School and Government-aided School(Department of English Education, 2008) Oli, Dharma JitThis research entitled " Reading Comprehension Proficiency of the Students of Janabadi Model School and Government-aided School" was conducted with the main objectives of finding out the reading comprehension of the students of grade six and to compare reading comprehension of the students of grade six of Janabadi Model school and Government-aided school. Altogether four schools were selected by using non-random sampling procedure for the data collection. Two schools were selected from Rolpa district, i.e. one was Janabadi Model school and another was government-aided school. Similarly two schools were selected from Rukum: one was Janabadi Model school and another was Government-aided school. Twenty students were selected randomly from each school. Thus, the magnitude of the sample population was eighty only. To carry out this research work, the researcher prepared both subjective and objective test items. The purpose behind selecting these districts was to represent similar districts with same geographical area and same socio-economic background of the students. The students studying in the Janabadi Model Schools in Rukum and Rolpa districts performed far better than the students studying in Government-aided schools. The average reading comprehension ability of their counterparts of Janabadi Model schools was 71.35 percent whereas the students of Government-aided school was 51.15 percent. This study has been divided into four different chapters. The first chapter deals with introduction which includes general background, review of the related literature, objectives of the study, significance of the study. Similarly, sources of data, process of data collection, limitation of the study are included in the second chapter. The third chapter deals with the analysis and Interpretation. In this chapter the collected data was analyzed by using simple statistical tools like mean and percentage. The fourth chapter deals with findings and recommendations.
