Item Exploring Common Expectations of Students in Large MixedAbility ELT Classes(Department of English Education, 2011) Bhandari, Hasta BahadurThis present study entitled 'Exploring Common Expectations of Students inLarge Mixed Ability ELT Classes' was intended to find out the commonexpectations of students in large mixed ability ELT classes. In order to fulfillthe objectives of the study, 100 secondary level students, i.e.Grade 10 studentswere selected from the five schools of the Kathmandu valley through purposivenon-random sampling procedure. A set of questionnaire was the research toolfor eliciting the required information for the study. The findings of the studyshowed that in every large mixed ability ELT classes, there are students ofdifferent abilities and they have their different expectations in the classroom. Itwas found that majority of the students are in favour of small class and theyexpect different sections for poor and bright students. It was also found thatmost of the students except varietiesinteaching strategies and they expect toget an opportunity to speak in the classroom. Similarly, it was found thatjudicious use of English with limited use of mother tongue can be significantlyhelpful in large mixed ability ELT classroom. It was also found that mixedability classes facilitate collaborative learning and helps the teacher to be a realteacher. This thesis is organized in four chapters along with references and appendix atthe end. The first chapter presents the general background, the concept of largeclasses, challenges and opportunities of a large mixed ability ELT class. It alsoincludes strategies for coping with the challenges. The second chapter isconcerned with the methodology used in the study, under which sources ofdata, sampling procedure, tools for data collection, process of data collectionand limitations of the study are described. The third chapter provides thecomprehensive picture of the analysis and interpretation of the data. The dataare analyzed and interpreted underthe five headings. Finally, chapter fourincludes findings and recommendations based on the analysis andinterpretation of the study.Item Information Literacy for Teacher Development(Department of English Education, 2011) Khanal, Laxmi PrasadThis research work entitled "Information Literacy for Teacher Development" has been carried out to find out the perception of university level English language teachers’ towards information literacy as one of the best skills for teacher development and available college environment to make them information literate teachers. The study was carried out considering the significance of the information literacy for teacher development in this 21st century where information plays a vital role in every steps of our life. The primary data was collected from sixty certificate or bachelor level English language teachers from thirty colleges of Kathmandu valley selected by using non-random judgmental sampling procedure. The data obtained from the respondents through questionnaires have been analyzed and interpreted using simple statistical tools.The study shows that almost all the teachers perceive that information literacy is one of the best emerging skills to make the teachers competent and proficient.On the other hand, there is no the effective environment available in their institution to make them information literate teachers. This thesis comprises four chapters. Chapter one deals with general background on teacher development and information literacy,review of related literature,objectives and significance of the study. Chapter two deals with the procedure adopted to carry out the research. It contains information on the sources of data,population of the study, sampling procedure, tools, and process of data collection and limitations of the study. Chapter three consists of the analysis and interpretation of the data. Chapter four deals with the major findings of the study on the basis of analysis and interpretation of the collected data. It also deals with some recommendations made, based on the major finding of the study. Finally,chapter four followed by the references and appendices.Item Use of Communicative Language Teaching in Nepalese Context(Department of English Education, 2011) Nepal, UwarajThe present study was conducted to examine the use of communicative language teaching in Nepalese context. The chief objective of the study was to find out the challenges faced by English language teachers in the use of communicative language. The present study was a survey research. The study was conducted in Morang district. The 20 teachers from government aided school sand 20 from private schools were taken as the sample of the study.Different views towards communicative language teaching were taken by questionnaires and to see the practicality of using communicative language teaching,English classes were observed by using checklist.After the interpretation and analysis of the data,the main finding derived was that there are some factors such as sufficient training on ELT,lack of sound knowledge on communicative approach and large size of the class which prevented the teachers from applying communicative method in their language teaching classroom at secondary level. This thesis consists of four chapters. The first chapter consists of general background, review of the related literature, objectives of the study and significance of the study. The second chapter deals with the methodology that consists of sources of data, sampling procedure, research tools for data collection, process of data collection and limitations of the study. The third chapter is the body of thesis. It is concerned with analysis, interpretation and presentation of the collected data. The last chapter describes the findings and recommendations derived from this research.
