Item Communicative Functions Used by Language Instructors(Department of English Education, 2009) Timsina, Shanti RamThis research is basically carried out on language functions performed byinstructors in various language institutes in the Kathmandu valley. The researchhighlights that situational use of exponents of language were not appropriatelyused and set in context as per the requirements. Similarly, the finding of theresearch reveals the fact that out of the most or hundred of communicativeactivities and language functions, i.e. 19.05% were found to have beencontextual in use, which shows an inadequacy of teaching methodology andlinguistic communicative competence on the part of language instructors in theinstitutes of the Kathmandu valley. The research supports that the situationalusages of language expression and exponents were poorly performed by theinstructors even in the class of language teaching classroom setting. This thesis consists of four chapters. The first chapter is introduction, whichmainly presents the discussion onlanguage teaching,language instructors,languageinstitutes and on theoretical framework about the related topic. It alsocontains objectives and significance of the study. The second chapter deals with the methodology adapted for the study. As the research is based on the performance of communicative functions by English language instructors in the language institutes of the Kathmandu valley, sample data were collected from 10 different language institutions of the targeted area. All together the sampling population consists of 20 English language instructors from 10 different language institutes. The third chapter presents the data descriptively and comparatively. Analysis and interpretation of the collected data are made on the basis of the qualification, experience and specialization of the instructors; and on the basis of teaching techniques and methodology. Finally, the fourth chapter presents the findings and recommendations.Item Techniques Used in Teaching Poetry(Faculty of Education, 2008) Adhikari, Padam PrasadThis research is carried out to find out the techniques used in teachingpoetry in 'Heritage of Words' in grade-XII and also to compare the techniquesused by the teachers in urban and rural areas of Panchthar district. Whileundergoing research, the researcher samples four higher secondary schools ofthe district on the basis of cluster sampling procedure (i.e. on the basis ofgeographical proximity). Two schools are selected from the districtheadquarterand other two from the rural areas of the district on the basis of judgmentalsampling procedure. The researcher finds various techniques like explanation,translation recitation, group work/pair work and discovery are being used whileteaching poetry. He also finds the difference between the techniques used bythe teachers in urban and rural areas of the district. It generally contains four chapters. The first chapter gives a shortintroduction about the title and background information, review of the relatedliterature, significance of the study and objectives of the study. The secondchapter summarizes the plans and procedures adopted by the researcher tocarry out this research. It covers about the sources of data (primary andsecondary), population of the study sampling procedures and limitations of thestudy. The third chapter analyzes and interprets the data using statistical toolslike tables and in the form of percentage. The fourth chapter summarizes thefindings of the study and recommends for further improvements.
