Abstract: This research entitled ‘English code mixing in Tharu Cinemas’ is a study of English code mixing in the 12 sampled Tharu cinemas. The main objectives of this study are to find out and analysis English code-mixing in terms of word classes (Noun, Verb, Adjective, Adverb), find out contexts in which code-mixing take place, frequency of occurrence of English word and find out the attitude of literate Tharu speakers towards English code-mixing in the Tharu cinemas. The primary sources of the data of this study were 30 literate Tharu speakers from Sunsari and Morang districts. The researcherused judgmental purposive sampling procedure for the collection of data. The finding of the study shows that there is a large amount of English code-mixing in the ‘Tharu cinemas.’ Nouns were maximally mixed followed by verbs, adjectives and adverbs. Regarding the context of code-mixing the interlocutors were seen to have mixed English words on such context as: talking about education, health, science, and technology, modern equipment, dress, modern life style, fashion, film, profession and post etc. The study consists of five chapters. Chapter one deals with introduction, general background, an introduction to language, an introduction to the Tharu and Tharu language, origins of Tharu, code-mixing, reasons of code-mixing, history of Tharu cinemas, statementof problem, objectives of the study, research questions, significance of the study and delimitations of the study. Chapter two deal with literature review and theoretical framework. It incorporates review of related literature, theoretical framework and conceptual framework. Chapter three includes the methodology for study including design of the study, Sources of data, sampling procedure, population of the study, research tools and process of data collection.Chapter four deals the analysis, interpretation and presentation of data using such simple statistical tools such as frequency and percentage. Chapter five consists of findings and recommendation of the research study.
