dc.description.abstractThe present thesis entitled ‘An Analysis of Spelling Errors Committed By Grade Ten Students’ has been prepared to identify and analyze the spelling errors committed by the tenth graders of different government aided schools within Hetauda Municipality of Makawanpur district. The present thesis aims at finding out the patterns of spelling errors committed by the tenth graders and to classify them into different groups and describe them. The researcher collected the data by distributing the tools to altogether 100 students from different government-aided schools. To collect primary data, two sets of test papers on free writing were given to the students. For the secondary data, the researcher depended upon the dictionary, grammar, books, different unpublished thesis and journals. Moreover,the researcher made ample use of internet resources too. The major findings of the study was the students committed higher number of vowel errors and the least number of other types of errors. The findings showed that students committed 236i.e. 1.18% of errors out of 2000 words and 161 i.e. 0.805% other types of errors.The findings again showed that students committed higher number of errors by replacing vowel with vowel. It was found that students committed 108 i.e. 0.54%errors in this sub-category. This thesis contains altogether four chapters. Chapter one includes general background which contains the definition of language, importance of the English language and why spelling is important in English language. It also includes an overview of error analysis, definition of spelling, a short history of English spelling, importance of spelling, spelling system in English, review of the related literature, objectives of the study and significance of the study. The second chapter deals with methodology adopted for the study. The resources, process of data collection, population of the study and limitations of the study are mentioned here.Similarly, chapter three deals with the analysis and interpretation of the data using descriptive and simple statistical tool of percentage. The errors were analyzed and interpreted in terms of category of errors, group and individual errors, gender-wise and school-wise. Likewise, chapter four incorporates findings and recommendations.en_US
