Abstract: | The present research on Emran Mian’s The Banker’s Daughter seeks to foreground the problems raised by capitalism. Basic thrust of the research lies in depicting how capitalism breeds crime in the society. In this line, the present research analyzes that capitalism teaches the wrong lesson of individualism and money mindedness. So the capitalists have the only target of getting profit. Because of this target, they stop co-operating pursuing ruthless competition. This capitalistic environment weakens their moral values and they count everything in monetary value. Even family and friendly relation is not given proper attention. Though the female protagonist, Hanna, attempts to develop human values and compassion on the suffering of her fellow beings, she fails to do so remaining in the bad company. Inspired by her father and other capitalists, she also starts counting everything in money. Eventually she also does art forgery to earn easy money. Parents and the elder generations, who have to be the ideal for the younger generation to do virtuous works, are the inspiration for the illegal acts. This leads to the state of indifference, deception, exploitation and suffering in the capitalistic society. The study focuses on the crimes committed by bourgeoisies like Mateen, Yani, Ghalib and Hanna, and proletarians like Bilal and Ma in the money dominated world. The finding of this research is that the bourgeoisies commit crime to maintain their dominance in the society and the proletarians commit crime to survive. |
