Title: Proficiency in the Use of Degree of Adjectives

Abstract: The research work entitled Proficiency in the Use of Degree of Adjectives aims at finding out the proficiency level of the students in the use of degree of adjectives and compare their proficiency in terms of items, school and sex. The sample population of the study consisted of 96 students from grade eight of Syangja district. For that, four different schools (two public and 2 private) were selected purposively. Twenty four students (12 boys and 12 girls) from each school were selected on the basis of simple random sampling procedure. A set of test-items was prepared on the basis of grade eight English text-book and other grammar books. The data, thus obtained, were marked and tabulated very systematically. Then, analysis and interpretation were done on the basis of the tabulated data in accordance with the set objectives. Finally, some recommendations were made on the basis of the findings derived from the analysis and interpretation of the data and the researcher's own opinion. The overall proficiency of the students in the use of degree of adjectives was found satisfactory. The students in private schools were found better than the students in public schools. The boys were slightly more proficient than the girls in total. The girls were found better than the boys in public schools where as the boys were found better than the girls in private schools. Similarly, the boys of private schools were found better than the boys in public schools. The girls of private schools performed far better than the girls of public schools. The students of Chirag Higher Secondary Boarding School were found to be more proficient than the students of others. The present thesis is divided into four chapters: Introduction, Methodology, Analysis and Interpretation, and Findings and Recommendations. The first chapter encompasses of general background, introduction to adjectives, review of related literature, objectives and significance of the study. Similarly, the second chapter deals with the methodology adopted to carry out this research. It contains the source of data (both primary and secondary), population of the study and sample population, sampling procedure, tools for data collection, pilot test, process of data collection and limitations of the study. Likewise, the third chapter deals with analysis and interpretation of data. This chapter consists of four parts: analysis of the overall proficiency in degree of adjectives, item wise analysis of the overall proficiency, comparison of the overall proficiency of different sexes both within and between the public and private schools and schoolwise comparison of the total proficiency. The fourth chapter presents the findings and recommendations with the analysis and interpretation of data carried out in chapter three. The final part of the thesis includes references and appendices.
