Abstract: The present study entitled"A Study on the Speaking Proficiency of Students of Grade Eight"aimed at finding out the speaking proficiency of the Lower Secondary level students in terms of pronunciation, accuracy, fluency and use of vocabulary. This study was based on the primary sources of data. The sample population of the study consisted of forty students studying in class eight from four publiclower secondary schools of Sarlahi district.The required data were collected by distributing test items to the selected respondents.The responses were collected and analyzed.It was found that the proficiency of the students in speaking skill was satisfactory as the score of the students in pronunciation was higher than the score of proficiency in accuracy, fluency and vocabulary. However, the accuracy level of the students was poor because they committed errors on different aspects of grammar usage. This thesis has four chapters: Chapter one introduces the study in term of general background, introduction to language skills, Speaking proficiency,review of related literature, objectives of the study and significance of thestudy. Chapter two consists of methodology. The study is based on both primary and secondary sources of the data. This chapter also includes sample population, sampling procedure, the research tool, procedure of data collection and limitation of the study. The third chapter deals with the analysis and interpretation of the collected data. The data were analyzed on the basis of variables that were specified in the objectives of the study.The last chapter compasses the finding and recommendations of the study.The findings have been outlined on the basis of the analysis and interpretation of the data and appropriate recommendations and pedagogical implications have been made.Finally, the references and the appendices which are necessary for the validation of the research are also presented.
