Abstract: The present research study entitled “A Study on the Translation of Quotations:A Case of Book ‘You Can Win”has been carried out to identify the quotations given in the book “You Can Win” and to find out gaps at the semantic and linguistic level, and techniques employed in translating the words and sentences of the quotations, based in the context of L1(English) and L2(Nepali). In this research work, data were collected based on the secondary sources from both of English and Nepali version of the book“You Can Win”.The data consisted of40 quotations from the selected book.These quotations were analyzed in terms of techniques that translator had employed to translate the L1 (English) quotations into L2 (Nepali) and similarly to find out gaps that occurred in course of this process. The findings of the study showed that translator has used altogether eleven different techniques such as: literal,couplet, addition, deletion, paraphrasing, compensation, expansion, reduction,triplet, contextual and substitution to translate the L1 quotations into L2.Similarly, some semantic and linguistic gaps were found in the translated quotations.for example word level, lexical level, structural level. This thesis is organized into five chapters. The first chapter deals with the general background of the topic, statement of the problem, objectives of the study, research questions, significance of the study, delimitations of the studyand operational definitions of the key terms. The second chapter includes review of related theoretical literature, review of related empirical literature,implication of the review for the study and conceptual framework. The third chapter covers all the areas of methodology. Likewise, the fourth chapter presents the analysis and interpretation of results. The fifth chapter includes conclusions and recommendation at three different levels.
