Nexus between Dream and Reality in Tarun Tejpal’s The Alchemy of Desire

Abstract

This thesis, entitled as “Nexus between Dream and Reality in Tarun Tejpal’s The Alchemy of Desire” deals with the connection of dream and reality as depicted in the novel. This research discloses how young generation gets trapped with their dreams. Having demonstrated that dream and reality have been consistently used in the novel, the nexus has been analyzed from the archetypal perspective. The analysis shows that Jungian archetypes are relentlessly used in the novel. Elements like love, attraction, sex, relationship, desire, dream, career, repulsion, separation, realization and reunion have been employed in the backdrop of various cultures. As the country is doomed between political chaos and post dependence changes, the nameless, narrator leaves no stone unchanged on his aspiration of being acclaimed writer. The greatest realization that “lived lives make better stories than seen lives” come at the end after much deploring of time, love and zeal. Eventually this research work concludes that there is strong nexus between dream and reality.
