Abstract: This research work entitled ‘English code-switching in Nepali Literature: A case of Saya’ is an attempt to find out the instances of English codes mixed in the Nepali novel Saya. English codes were explored in terms of medical terminologies and sentence types and language functions. The novel for this research was selected by using non-random sampling purposive sampling procedure. For this research study,the secondary data were collected from the novel. For the purpose of data collection I applied observation and used diary to take notes. The collected data from the novel were analysed and interpreted descriptively by using language as a primary way of analysis. The major findings of the study are that different language functions like,thanking, expressing joy, questioning,taking leave,clarifying, prohibiting, expressing surprise, warning and scoldingare served bysimple English exponents in the Nepali novel Saya. Similarly, we can find the instances of various medical terminologies used in the novel.For example, capsule, hospital, coma, ulcer and so on. This thesis is divided into five different chapters. The first chapter, Introduction deals with background of the study, statement of the problem, objectives of the study,research questions, significance of the study, delimitations of the study and operational definition of the key terms. Similarly, the second chapter consists of the review of the theoretical literature,review of the empirical literature,implication ofthe review for the study, and conceptual framework. The third chapter deals with the methodological aspect under which design and methodof the study,population,sample and sampling strategy, study area/field, data collection tools and techniques,data collection procedureand data analysis and interpretation procedure. The fourth chapter focuses on the analysis and interpretation of data and the summary/discussion of the results.And finally,the fifth chapter of the study consists of conclusion and recommendations of the study forpolicy making level and practice level with some directions for the future research works.
