Socio-Cultural Feminism in Bhagat`s One Indian Girl

Abstract

From the time immemorial women are marginalized by the patriarchal society and symbolized as 'other' which is depicted in One Indian Girl. This research basically focuses on the socio-cultural aspects of feminism that are portrayed in this novel. It is not easy to get high education, well-paid job and upgraded form of socio- economic status. Radhika as a protagonist plays the major role to illustrate the modern Indian girl as conceived by Bhagat. Borrowing the ideas from Simone de Beauvoir and Eleanor Marx and drawing references from other scholars such as Jane Freedman this research brings into light the socio-cultural aspects of feminism in One Indian Girl, which has not been explored enough yet. In doing so, it establishes Radhika as a self motivated Indian girl who sets herself free of the stereotypical patriarchal roles at the expense of her determination and industriousness. The study, in this way, paves the path for new researchers to see Bhagat’s works through different spectrums of feminism.
