Abstract: This study intends to find out the problems faced by lower secondary level students in mathematics. The researcher adopted descriptive survery method in this study. This study was based on qualitative and quantative data. The major objective of this study was to find the problems faced by lower secondary level students in learning mathematics. For this study, the researcher had divided Ilam in two areas on the basis of developmental status: Urban and Rural. Five schools from each area were selected as the sample of the study. Among them two were privately managed boarding schools and three were governmental managed schools. From each school one mathematics teacher was taken, through questionnaire the researcher had made class observation from. After this, the researcher made an interview guideline concerning the problems. The collected data were tabulated, interpreted and analyzed. The sample percentage and mean weight were used to interpret and analyze the data also the researcher had made the set of opinionnaire. On the basis of interpretation and analysis of data the major findings of this study are as follows: Learning mathematics in lower secondary level is affected by many factors such as illiterate parents, low economic status, poverty and lack of encouragement from parents to their study. Similarly the gap of weak and talent students, unavailability of teaching materials, lack of trained teachers, insufficient furniture and classroom management are the problems for students also lack of good administration, sufficient budget for school. In providing the above requirement, the problems faced by students may decrease in school to provide good opportunities for student in lower secondary level.
