Abstract: This research work entitled "Techniques of Teaching Reading Skill at Basic Level" is an attempt to find out the techniques of teaching reading skill and attitude of teachers towards teaching reading at grade 5 in Nepalese contexts. This is both quantitative and qualitative inquiry, based on multi- method approach, descriptive and narrative analysis of data. The main tools for the data collection were questionnaire and observation. The data were collected from 12 English teachers teaching at Basic Level Schools of Sunsari district by using questionnaire. Further the teachers' classes were observed using the observation checklist. The findings of the study showed that most of the teachers were found academically qualified to teach at Basic level. No teachers used single technique to warm up the students. They used various techniques such as asking pre-reading questions related to the coming topic, starting with vocabulary race, asking questions related to the topic, doing pair work related to the topic, providing hints about the lesson, telling reference, by visualization of theme of content. Most of the respondents preferred student-centered techniques while teaching English for Basic level students which indicates that teachers are moving away from traditional teaching methods, where the teacher takes center stage and controls the learning process, to more modern approaches, where students play an active role in their own learning. Various techniques were used by teachers to teach reading skill at Basic level such as reading aloud, story map, scanning and skimming, reading in front of the class, summarizing and visualizing the background, answering the questions, clarifying, structure proposition, chart, recitation etc. Out of them reading aloud technique was mostly used technique and scanning and skimming technique were occasionally used techniques. This thesis consists of five chapters. The first chapter deals with background of the study, statement of the problem, objectives of the study, research questions, and significance of the study and delimitation of the study. The second chapter deals with the review of related theoretical literature, review of related literature and conceptual framework. The third chapter deals with research design, sources of data, population and sample, sampling procedure, data collection tools, data collection procedure and method of analysis of data. Chapter four deals with the analysis and interpretation of data, while chapter five focuses on the conclusion and recommendations and implications.
