Abstract: The research entitled ‘Effectiveness of Realia in Teaching Meanings of Words’ was aimed to find out the effectiveness of real object in teaching meanings of words. It has been carried out practically and comparatively. For this purpose, Shree Deneb International Secondary School situated in New Baneshwor, Kathmandu, was selected by purposive sampling method and 40 students from Grade 3 were taken as a sample population. Test items were the main tool for data collection: A Pre-test was administered to determine the existing proficiency level of the students. Then, they were divided into two groups: experimental and control group on the basis of odd-even roll number according to the individual scores obtained in the Pre-test. After dividing them into two groups, both groups were taught 30 lessons separately but the words were same. After completion of 30 lessons, a post-test was administered using the same test items of the Pre-test. Then the performance scores of the students of both test were compared and analyzed. The main finding of the research reveals that realia was very effective in teaching meanings of words at Grade-3 compared to usual traditional ways of teaching. This thesis consists of four chapters. Each chapter is divided in different sub-chapters. The first chapter is an introductory chapter. It includes general background, objective of the study, significance of the study and review of the related literature. The second chapter deals with the methodology. It includes the sources of data, population of the study, sampling procedure, tools of data collection, process of data collection and limitations of the study. The third chapter deals with analysis, interpretation and presentation of the data. And chapter four consists of findings and recommendations.
