Abstract: The present study entitledApplication of Progress Test in DevelopingWriting Skillwascarried out with the aim to identify andcompare thestudents' progress based on age and gender. I carried out my research usingnon-random purposivesampling procedure. A set of questionnaire wasprepared as a research tool for the elicitation of the required information and sotheinformants of Dailekh District were taken asthesample for the study. Themajor finding of the research was thatdiagnostic test had a better effect indeveloping writing skill to the studentsoftheEnglish language. Thisthesis has been divided intofour chapters. The first chapter deals withgeneral background, linguistic scenario of ELT in Nepal, testing in languageteaching, types of testing, need of tests, a short note on measurement, test andevaluation, and relationship between teaching and testing. It also includesreview of literature, objectives and significance of the study. The secondchapter is concerned with the methodology used in the study. It includessources of data, population of the study, sampling procedure, research tools,process of data collection and limitations of the study.The third chapterprovides the comprehensive picture of the analysis and interpretation of thedata. The final chapter lists the major findings and recommendations of thestudy.
