dc.description.abstractThe thesis entitled 'Language of formal congratulations' is a descriptive study of language used in formal congratulations from sociolinguistic perspective. The main aim of the study is to find out language aspects, namely, tense, voice and sentence type. It also intends to find out special words and components of formal congratulations. To meet the objectives of the research, forty formal congratulations were collected from four English newspapers on the basis of random sampling procedure. The collected data were analyzed using the tables and figures. The researcher found out that the formal congratulations consist of complex, non-past tense and active sentences at the greatest frequency. The researcher also discovered that the formal congratulation is written in a distinctive style with full of illustration. I have divided this thesis into the four chapters. The first chapter contains general background, review of the related literature, objectives of the study, significance of the study and definition of specific terms. The second chapter contains methodology which is sub-chaptered as the sources of data, sampling procedure, process of data collection and the limitation of the study. This is the chapter which studies about the methodology and procedure that have been carried out during the study. It also talks about how the data were collected. The third chapter includes the analysis and interpretation of the data obtained from the field. In this chapter, the data are analyzed systematically and are interpreted so as to meet the objectives of the study. Finally, the last, fourth chapter has the findings and recommendations of the study in which some pedagogical implications have been recommended. This chapter recommends some useful findings which can be implemented in the language class.en_US
