The present study entitled "Developing Functional Competence Through Scene Setting" is an attempt to find out effectiveness of scene-setting in developing students' ability to use language functions. The researcher selected thirty-two students' of grade nine from Shree Mahendra Higher Secondary School of Nuwakot district by using non-random judgmental sampling procedure. The researcher used both primary and secondary sources of data. At first, he administered pre-test to find out the current proficiency level of the students. Then he taught 24 lessons by creating scenes inside the classroom. Two progressive tests were conducted in the interval of nine lessons. And, finally, the post-test was administered using the same test items used in the pre-test. Through the analysis, interpretation and comparison of the data obtained from different tests, it was found that scene-setting was more effective in teaching language functions. The thesis consists of four chapters. The first chapter encompasses general background, review of related literature, objectives and significance of the study. The second chapter deals with methodology, data collection procedure and limitations of the study. The third chapter deals with the analysis and interpretation of collected data. Similarly, the fourth chapter includes findings and recommendations with the help of analysis and interpretation of the data. The final part of the study consists of references and appendices.en_US
