Abstract: The present thesis entitled “Errors committed by Grade Nine students in theuse of Prepositions” aims to identify the errors in the use of prepositionscommitted by Nine graders, studying at the Govt. school. To determine theerrors in the use of prepositions, the test items were prepared and tested to thesampled population of eighty students of grade Nine of Shree Kamala DeviH.S.S. Namadi-4, Ramechhap. Thetest items consisted of five types ofquestions. They contained multiple choice item, fill in the blanks item, usingthe prepositions in the meaningful sentences etc. To make descriptive study ofthe errors committed in the use of prepositions, their responses were taken asthe data for further interpretation on the basis of which further pedagogicalimplications could be derived. Holistic analysis was done to describe thequality of test items mainly in deriving the students’ errors in selecting theprepositions. Item wise analysis was done to identify the errors and tocompare their strengths and weaknesses in relation to one another. Afteranalysis, it was found that students committed errors mostly in the phrasalprepositions than in the simple prepositions. Thisthesisconsists of four different chapters. Chapter one deals with generalbackground of the study, English language and its signification in Nepal,importance of studying learners’ errors, error analysis and its steps, a shortdescription of English grammar and prepositions,classificationofprepositions with some examples. Similarly, review of the related literature,objectives of the study and significance of the study are included. Chapter twostates the methodologywhich was followed in the study. It deals with thesources of data, population of the study, samplingprocedure, research tools,and processof data collection and limitations of the study. Chapter threepresents the analysis and interpretation of the data collected from theinformants. Chapter four states the findings and recommendations of thestudy.The appendices have been put at the end of the research.
