Abstract: This present study entitled "Developing Functional competence Appropriately" aims at findings out student's development in the ability to use English Language Function (making apologies, asking for permission and describing purposes). This is an action type of study. The researcher selected grade nine students of Shree Mahendra Higher Secondary School of Sunsari District by using non-random judgmental sampling. First of all, he carried out pre-test to find out the current proficiency level of the students. Then he taught 21 classes by the use of pair work technique as a new strategy. At last, he conducted post test using the same test items to these students (forty in number). By the comparison of the scores of the both tests, it was found that the students did better in post test except some cases. The thesis consists of four chapters. Chapter one encompasses general background, review of the related literatures, objectives of the study and significance of the study . Chapter two deals with methodology. It incorporates sources of data, population of the study, sample population, tools for data collection and limitation of the study. Chapter three presents the analysis and interpretation of the collected. In this chapter, data are analyzed and interpreted through statistical and descriptive approach. Chapter four includes findings and recommendation with the help of analysis and interpretation of data. In conclusion, references and appendices are included.
