Abstract: The present study entitled, “Errors Committed by Grade Nine Students on Reported Speech” attempts to identify and describe the errors committed by the students while doing the reported speech and to compare the errors between the students of public and private schools and find out their proficiency. The data were collected from eighty students of the private and public schools. Forty students were selected from the private schools and the other forty students were selected from the public schools of Palpa district. Simple random sampling procedure was utilized to sample the population. The major finding of the study was that the private school students were found much better in comparison to their counterparts in the public schools. The thesis consists of four chapters. The first chapter deals with the introduction consisting of deliberations on the English language, its present status, E.L.T situation and the importance of grammar. Overview of reported speech, overview of errors, review of the related literature, objectives of the study and significance of the study. The second chapter describes the methodology which includes sources of data collection, sampling procedure, and limitations of the study. Similarly, the third chapter contains the analysis, interpretation and presentations of the data. It deals with the total proficiency and total errors committed by them. The findings and pedagogical implications of this study have been listed in the last chapter.
