Problem of Street Children in Nepal: Case Study of Kathmandu

Abstract

The study was carried out to identify the problem of street children, finding the root came for being street children and asses the legal provision and steps taken by government for the welfare of street children. Total 50 street children from New Road and Ratna park of Kathmandu valley were selected on the basis of non-probability sampling method for this study.

Primary data were collected through semi-structured questionnaire and direct observation. Children were interviewed in the different places of Kathmandu.

Qualitative and Quantitative data were analyzed by using statistical tool with the help of computer software like MS excel.

Majority of the street children aged between 11-13 years was migrating to Kathmandu for survival and being street children. The highest number of the street children was from the caste of Brahmin and Chhetri followed 26% and 20% respectively.

Economic, social, family, and poverty were causes for being street children. Among them family cause was the prime cause for the street children followed by 38%.

Fooding areas, cloths problem, night stay problem, community treatment, government treatment, medical problem were the major problems of street children.
