Abstract: In the present study entitledA study on the use of punctuation in guided andessay writing; the main objective was to find out punctuation marks used bythe students while writing an essay. The researcher collected the data bydistributing test items to 80 students from four different government aidedschools of Pokhara valley. The data were analyzed in order to find out theitems of punctuation marks used in essay writing. The major findingis thatoutof eleven items of punctuation marks,eight items arefoundincorrectlyusedinessay writing. The study consists of four chapters. Chapter one is introduction and includesgeneral background, literature review, objectives and significance of the study.Chapter two deals with the methodology applied to conduct the research. Thischapter consists of sources of data, sampling procedure, tools of datacollection, process of data collection and limitations of the study. Thejudgmental sampling procedure and random sampling procedure were used forchoosing sample population. Test items were the major tools of data collection.Chapter three consists of analysis and interpretation of the collected data. Theresponses provided by the students were analyzed with the help of tables andfigures.Finally,chapter four dealswith the findings and recommendations ofthe study. References and Appendices have been included in the final sectionof thesis.
