Abstract: This thesis entitled "Strategies Adopted by grade Eleven Students inLearning English Vocabulary" is an attempt to identify the strategiesadopted by grade eleven students in learning English vocabulary whichare found in their text book of compulsory English. In order to do so theresearcher collected data from the students of purposively selected fivehigher secondary schools of the KathmanduValleynamely,JanamaitriCollege, Sahid SmarakCollege, Janasewa Higher Secondary School,Vishwo Niketan H.S.S.andCapital Hill College. The total samplepopulation of the study consists of 100 students selected using simplerandom samplingprocedure. The researcher selected 20 students (10 boysand 10 girls) of grade eleven from each higher secondary school. Thequestionnaire was the major tool for the data collection. The researcherspent five days in each higher secondary school for collecting the data.The researcher foundthatthe most frequency usedvocabulary learningstrategieswere 'have a writing practice in learning', 'ask your teacher totranslate into Nepali', 'keep a dictionary with you', 'learn the word bydefinition' etc.Similarly, the leastfrequently used strategieswere 'useinternetrelated to English language', 'test with your parents, listen to theEnglish language radio' etc. This study consists of four chapters. Chapter one consists of the generalbackground, review of related literature, objectives of study, definition ofspecific terms and significance of the study. Chapter two consists of themethodology of the study. It encompasses the source of data, populationof study, samplingprocedure, tools for data collection,process of datacollection and limitations of the study.Chapter three consists of theanalysis and interpretation of the data. The data were analyzed andtabulated on the basis of the students' responses and also classifiedin 10 terms ofdifferent taxonomiesas classified by different scholars. Chapterfour consists of the findings and recommendations of the study. Thereferences and appendices are the concluding parts of the study.
