Abstract: This research entitled ‘Phatic Communion in English and Tamang’ was carried out to find out the initiation process of English and Tamang native speakers as phatic communion. It was also carried out to find out similarities and differences of the processes of phatic communion between English and Tamang native speakers in gender. For this research a VDC of Kavre district was selected and two government-aided schools of Panauti Municipality were selected as study area. Altogether 40 informants of the Tamang language were selected, among them there were 20 male and 20 female. Similarly, there were 20 native speakers of the English language as well. There were two sets of questionnaire for both the natives of English and Tamang languages. The collected data were analyzed on the basis of two criteria; forms of sentences and functions of language. On the basis of the main findings both the natives used interrogative form of sentences and regarding language functions, they used asking about activities function more than others for phatic communion while responding to the given situations. The study has been presented in four chapters. The first chapter consists of general background, relationship between language and society, functions of language, phatic communion, linguistic scenario of Nepal, an introduction to the Tamang Language, contrastive analysis and its importance, review of the related literature, objectives of the study, and the significance of the study. The second chapter describes methodology applied to carry out the study which includes sources of data; primary and secondary, research tools, process of data collection and limitations of the study. The third chapter consists of analysis and interpretation of data which also consists of mainly two parts. The first parts dealt with an analysis of exponents used by native speakers of English and Tamang languages on the basis of forms of sentences and functions of language and the second part dealt with the comparison of form and functions of language. The findings are derived from the analysis and interpretation in the fourth chapter. In the final section of study, the references and appendices are included.
