Abstract: The thesis entitled “Forms of Giving, Accepting and Declining Suggestions in Maithili and English” is an attempt to find out forms of suggestions in English and Maithili and compare them .The researcher used both primary and secondary sources of data .The sample population of the study consisted of 60 Maithili speakers. They were selected randomly. Questionnaire and structured interview were used for data collection. Secondary data were taken from Matreyek (1983, p.125) Blundell et al. (1997, p.140) and Jones (1987, p.59). After completing the analysis of collected data 58 forms of suggestions in Maithili were found. Out of 58 forms 32 for giving, 14 for accepting and 12 for declining suggestions were found. This thesis consists of four chapters. First chapter deals with introduction of the study. It consists of introduction to the English and Mailthili languages, linguistic scenario of Nepal, form function relation, literature review and objectives and significance of the study. The second chapter describes the methodology applied to carry out the research; it consists of primary sources of data, secondary sources of data, population of the study, sampling procedure, and tools for data collection, process of data collection and limitations of the study. The third chapter consists of analysis and interpretation of the data. It deals with the forms of suggestions in English and Maithili and comparison on the basis of number, sentence use and frequent forms of suggestions. The fourth chapter presents the findings derived from the analysis and interpretation of data. It also consists of recommendations to the teachers, students and learners of the English and Maithili language as second language. In the final section of the study, the references and appendixes are included.
