Abstract: This research study is an effort to find out and compare the different terms of greetings, welcoming and taking leave used in the English and the Newari languages. For this research study the researcher took sample population from Kathmandu Valley. They were 80 native speakers of the Newari language. Sample populations were selected by using judgemental purposive sampling procedure of non-random sampling. The major tool for the collection of data was the questionnaire. The sources of data for the terms of greeting, welcoming and talking leave in English were based on the related books and the previous research studies carried out in the Department of English Education. The researcher used simple statistical tool and table to analyze and interpret the collected data. The findings of the research study showed that 'Jwajalapā +TOA', 'Bhāgiyā/Bhāiti + K.T.', 'Mhafu lā' are the terms of greeting, 'Lasakusa' 'Jwajalapā Jhāsan', 'Bhāgiyā Disan' and 'Jhāsan/Disan' are the terms of welcoming and 'Jwajlapā', 'Bhāgiyā/Bhāiti +KT.' etc. are the terms of taking leave for senior or respected people. 'Chu Kha/du+K.T.', 'F.N.' are the terms of greeting, 'Fetu', 'Wā/Cwan' are the terms of welcoming and 'Wane nhee', 'Ji wanā chwaye', 'Kā' are the terms of taking leave with juniors. On the other hand, 'Hello', 'Good morning/afternoon/evening' are the terms of greeting, 'Welcome', 'Welcome you', 'Welcome home' are terms of welcoming and, 'Good-bye', 'Bye', 'See you again' are the terms of taking leave specially for seniors. And 'Hi' and 'F.N.', are the terms of greeting. 'Take a seat' is the term of welcoming and, 'Bye', 'Love you', 'Cheerio' are the terms of taking leave with juniors, in the English language. The first chapter contains introduction which includes general background, language functions, languages in Nepal, introduction to the Newari language, review of the related literature, objectives of the study and significance of the study. The second chapter deals with the methodology which includes sources of data, sample population and sampling procedure, tools for data collection, process of data collection and limitations of the study. Similarly, the third chapter consists of the analysis, interpretation and presentation of data. The data have been analyzed and interpreted descriptively and comparatively. Lastly, at the end, the fourth chapter contains the findings; pedagogical implications and recommendations.
