Abstract: This research entitled "Techniques of Teaching Vocabulary Used by Public and Private School Teachers" was an attempt to find out and compare the techniques that were used by public and private English teachers of lower secondary level while teaching English vocabulary in terms of word meaning, word pronunciation and word spelling. To fulfil the objectives, the researcher prepared the observation form including the above components of vocabulary teaching to observe the teachers' activities on these aspects. Five private and five public schools from Salyan district and five private and five public schools from Dang district were selected by using non-random purposive sampling. Four classes of each teacher were observed. The data were analyzed using simple statistical tools like tabulation, percentage and moreover by using descriptive approach. The findings of the study show that most of the teachers of public schools used mother tongue translation, modeling and reading aloud techniques whereas most of the teachers of private schools used contextual presentation, modeling and dictation techniques to teach word meaning, word pronunciation and word spelling respectively. The thesis has been divided into four different chapters. The first chapter deals with general background of the study, review of the related literature, objectives of the study and the significance of the study. The third chapter deals with the analysis and interpretation of the data. The fourth chapter focuses on the findings and recommendations. The selected public and private schools and the observation form have been included in appendices.
