Language Used in Sports News: A Descriptive Study

Abstract

This present study entitled 'Language Used in Sports News: A Descriptive Study' has made an attempt to find out the kind of language used in sports news in terms of sentence types, tense, voice, aspect and special vocabularies. This study has revealed that simple sentence, past tense, active voice and simple aspect were used highly in sports news of all three newspapers (i.e. The Kathmandu Post, The Himalayan Times and The Rising Nepal) published from Nepal. So far as special vocabulary is concerned, seventy nine special vocabularies used in sports news were found to have been used. Nouns among major words were found to have been used more frequently than others. Only three adjectives and fourteen verbs were found. Rests were all nouns. But no adverb was found. This thesis is divided into four main chapters and other sub-chapters. The first chapter deals with general background of the study, linguistics, varieties of linguistic codes, registers, mass media, news, sports and the language of sports news, literature review, objectives, significance of the study and definition of terms of the study. The second chapter deals with the methodology adopted for carrying out the study. It includes sources of data, sampling procedures, tools for data collection, process of data collection and some limitations of the study. Similarly, the third chapter presents analysis and interpretation of the data collected for the study using simple statistical tools like percentage and frequency. The fourth chapter presents the findings and some recommendations based on the analysis and interpretation of the data. At the end, references and appendices along with some sample news stories of sport news are presented.
