Abstract: This thesis entitled 'Transformations in English and Maithili' has been carried out to find out transformations used in the Maithili and English languages and to conduct their comparative analysis. To carry out the research, the data for the Maithili language were collected from native speakers of Maithili language living in Dhanusha and Mahottary districts and the data for the English language were extracted from R.B.M +2 Jaleshwar and R.R.M. Campus, janakpur. The researcher utilized both primary and secondary sources of data. The sample population of the study consists of 60 Maithili native speakers who were selected using stratified random sampling procedure to elicit the required data of transformations in Maithili but for English it was taken from secondary sources. A set of interview schedules was prepared for literate and educated informants. After collecting the data, it was analyzed, interpreted and then presented using descriptive and comparative with the help of tables, diagrams and illustrations. The major findings of the study are: In yes/no question, an auxiliary verb occurs at the beginning of the sentences in English where as the yes/no question maker 'ki' is introduced and placed at the beginning of the sentences in Maithili. 'Wh- word' occurs at the beginning of the sentence in English where as k-words occur after the subject and at the beginning of the sentence when they function as subjects. The thesis has been written in four chapters. The first chapter deals with the general background, review of related literature, objectives of study, significance of the study and definition of some specific terms. The second chapter of the study deals with the methodology adopted for the study under which the sources of data, sampling procedure, tools for data collection, process of data collection and limitations of the study are mentioned. The third chapter deals with the analysis and interpretation of the data. It comprises rules of transformation in English and Maithili, and comparison of the processes of transformation in Maithili with those in English. The fourth chapter consists of the findings of the study and on the basis of the findings, some recommendations and pedagogical implications have been mentioned in this chapter. References and appendices are mentioned after the fourth chapter.
