Abstract: This research study has beenprepared to find out the problems and theircauses in teaching and learning speaking skill in secondary level ofNuwakot district. In order to find out the problems, two types of tools:questionnaires for the teachers and students and class observation formswere prepared. In the questionnaire different questions were asked relatedto the teaching and learning of speaking and its problematic areas such asclassroom situation, texts, teaching materials and the problems andrecommendations. Similarly, classroom situations and activities, use oflanguage, teaching materials and teachers' attitude toward teachingspeaking were included in the observation form. The questionnaires weredistributed to the teachers of 15 schools of Nuwakot district and 15English classes were observed to find out the problems and the causes ofthose problems. It has been found that lack of physical facilities, notusing proper teaching materials in teaching speaking, students poorEnglish background, not giving focus on speaking test in the exam, werethe major problems in teaching speaking skill in lower secondary level. This thesis comprises four chapters. The first chapter deals with theintroduction of the topic in which general background of the Englishlanguage , ELT in Nepal,general information about teaching and learningspeaking skill, activities in developing speaking skill, the review ofrelated literature, objectives of the study and the significance of thestudy are presented. Chapter two includes all the areas of methodologydealing with the source of data and population of the study, samplingprocedure, research tools, the process of data collection and thelimitations of the study. Chapter three contains the analysis and interpretation of the collected datausingdifferent charts, tables, diagrams, figures and so on. Similarly, the 10 last chapter throws its light on presenting the findings and implications ofthe study and also some recommendations for the purpose of improvingin concerned field. References and appendices are presented in the finalpart of this study.
