Abstract: This research entitled "Effectiveness of Teaching Vocabulary ThroughDictionary"was an attempt to find out the effectiveness of dictionary use invocabulary teachingto the students ofgrade ten. To complete this task, a set oftestsitem was constructed selecting thevocabularyitems from grade 10textbook. Saraswati Higher Secondary school in Kanchanpur district wasselected to carry out the research. The sample populationwas40 studentsstudying in grade 10.Before starting the experimental teaching , the studentswere pre-tested to determine their proficiency level in vocabulary items. Theywere divided into odd-even ranking on the basis of the performance of thepre-test. The experiment with dictionary use continued for one month. Theexperimental group was taught vocabulary through the use of dictionary andthe controlledgroup was taught vocabulary through usual techniques liketranslation, definition, enumeration, drill and so on. When one month wascompleted the post-test was undertaken using the same pre-test items. Theresults of both pre-and post-test were compared to determine the effectivenessof two techniques. Group 'A' excelled group 'B' by 32.55 average incrementpercentage in post test in holistic comparison .So, it is evident that vocabularyitems taught through the use of dictionary showed significant progress inthevocabulary achievement of thestudents.The thesis has been divided into four different chapters. The first chapter dealswith general background of the study, review of the related literature,objectives of the study and significanceof the study . The second chapterconsists of methodology under which sources of data collection ,population ofthe study, sampling procedure tools for data collection, process of datacollection and limitations of the study. The third chapter deals with theanalysis and interpretation of data which have been doneon the basis of thedifferencebetween the average score in percentage of each group in pre-test and post test. The fourth chapter includes the findings and recommendations.After analyzing and interpreting the data, the findings have been drawn andsome recommendations based on those findings have been presented. The lastpart of the thesis contains references and appendices.
