Abstract: This research work entitled “Effectiveness of Hand Drawn Pictures for Teaching Word Meaning” attempts to find out the effectiveness of hand drawn pictures in teaching meaning of the words at lower secondary level. To carry out this work, sixty grade eight students studying at Shree Sarwajanik Secondary School, Nijgadh – 2, Bara were the sample population. A pre-test was given before teaching to determine the proficiency of the students in vocabulary items. Then they were divided into two groups on the basis of the odd-even numbers ascertained by the result of pre-test. One group was taught vocabulary items using hand drawn pictures and other group was taught without using any materials except a text book for duration of a month. It was revealed that meanings of the words can be best taught with the use of pictures which can be drawn by the teacher himself/ herself. The study consists of four chapters. Chapter one introduces the study in terms of general background, review of the related literature, objectives of the study, significance of the study and definitions of the specific terms. Similarly, chapter two deals with the methodology applied to conduct the study. This consists of the sources of data, population of the study, sampling procedure, tools for data collection, process of data collection and limitations of the study. Likewise, chapter three deals with the analysis and interpretation of the raw data obtained from the informants. The collected data were analyzed on the basis of variables that were specified into objectives and interpreted by using simple statistical tools and presented with the help of tables, charts and diagrams. Finally, Chapter four deals with the major findings, recommendations and pedagogical implications of the study.
