An Analysis of English Textbook: The Magic of Words

Abstract

This study presents an evaluation of one of the compulsory English textbooks for grade XI of Higher Secondary Level, 'The Magic of Words'. The book has been evaluated and analyzed on the basis of its physical and academic aspects. The data for the present study were collected through the primary and secondary sources. The overall analysis was done by using simple statistical tools like percentage. The main finding of the study is that the textbook is prepared according Higher Secondary Level of the students and the content of the book is simple and easy to understand. Most of the reading texts are comprehensible for the students. The present thesis is divided into four major chapters. The first chapter presents introduction, general background, history of English language teaching in Nepal, textbook: A brief introduction of textbook, importance of a textbook, use of textbook to the teachers and students, types of textbooks, characteristics of a good textbook, textbook analysis, the purpose of textbook analysis, the selected textbook, framework for textbook analysis, literature review and objectives of the study. The second chapter deals with the methodology used to carry out this study which includes sources of data, the sample and sampling procedure, tools for data collection, the process of data collection and limitations of the study. The third chapter includes the analysis of the data collected from the primary and secondary sources. The data have been analyzed by using simple statistical tools such as percentage and table. The fourth chapter lists the findings and recommendations of the study. In the final section of the study, the references and appendices are included.
