Abstract: This thesis entitled “Case in English and Tharu” attempted to identify cases in the Tharu language and to compare those with that of English. The researcher collected data from eighty Tharu native speakers of Chailahi VDC of Deukhuri valley of Dang district. She chose only Deukhuri valley of Dang district and Deukhuriya dialect of Tharu for the data and she used the secondary sources for the data of English Cases. The cases identified in the Tharu are agentive, experiencer, instrumental, object, source, goal, location, time, possessor. The comparison shows that the case system in English is more complicated than that of English. This thesis consists of four chapters. The first chapter deals with general background, importance of English language, linguistic scenario of Nepal, introduction to the Tharu language, introduction to case, basic concept of case grammar, case marking system, cases in the English language by Fillmore, review of the related literature, objectives of the study, significance of the study, limitations of the study. The second chapter is related to the methodology applied to carry out the research. It deals with the sources of data, population of the study, sampling procedure, and tool for data collection, process of data collection and limitations of the study. The third chapter deals with the analysis and interpretation of the data. The researcher used descriptive style to present the Tharu cases and she has compared and contrasted the Tharu and English cases with examples. The fourth chapter deals with the findings and recommendations made in the light of analysis and interpretation. On the basis of findings, some recommendations have been made for pedagogical implications.
