Abstract: This study was carried out during April, 2006 to May, 2006 at four periodicmarkets in Itahari Municipality of Sunsari distrit. Which are Budhabare,Aaitabare, Jantabasti (Tuesday) and Jantabasti (Saturday). This study wastargeted to find out the problems and prospects of this periodic market forRural Development. Data were collected through primary and secondarysources. The primary data were collected through field visit and secondary datawere collected from various official sources and publications. The researchdesign of this study was both exploratory and some analyticaldue to the natureand objectives of the study topic. Regarding these methods of research the sample size also determined, where 60 respondents were taken from four ha t.To collect the data interview and observation method were adopted. Thecollected data were analysed through tabulation, average, percentage, bardiagram and pie chart. The limitation of this study was focused in the specificarea i.e. four periodic market centres of Itahari with limited time framework. It was found in four periodic market, vegetables played a dominant rolefunctioning centrality in each periodic markets. Most of the traders had verysmall amount of capital, all the shops were in open space, all the periodicmarkets were in dusty place and there were no any facility of Toilet, drinkingwater, sanitation and others. The existence of the periodic market is closelyrelated to the needs of the society and not just the exchange of goods. Thevolume and number of periodic market is increasing day by day due to theincreasing the size of population in the study area.
