English Code Mixing in Teenagers' Language

Abstract

This thesis entitled "English Code Mixing in Teenagers' Language" attempts to present the study to find out English word classes, phrases, sentences and language functions that are used in teenagers' language. To accomplish it, the researcher used non-random judgemental sampling procedure to collect the data. The primary sources were consulted and 80 students were purposively selected for the study. She also used the recording device to collect the data. The overall conclusion of the research is that English code-mixing took place while speaking the Nepali language by the teenagers. She found that code-mixing in word level was the highest than that of others. Noun and noun phrases have been mixed highly. The words and phrases used by teenagers were common which we use in day to day communication. Simple sentences and the language functions for greeting, expressing love, expressing compliments are frequently used in teenagers' language. This thesis consists of four chapters: Introduction, Methodology, Analysis and Interpretation and Findings and Recommendations. The first chapter contains introduction, literature review, objectives and significance of the study. The second chapter deals with the methodology which includes sources of data, population of the study, sampling procedure, tools for data collection, process of data collection and finally limitations of the study. The third chapter includes the analysis and interpretation of the data elicited. Code-mixing by the teenagers is analyzed and interpreted in terms of word classes, phrases, sentence types and language functions. The fourth chapter includes findings and recommendations.
