Abstract: Untouchable by Mulk Raj Anand depicts the social discrimination and injustice which creates fragmentation in the society. It shows the class struggle between the social outcaste and the privileged people. The upper class people exploit the downtrodden and untouchable in every situation. Untouchables don’t get opportunity to join school, to enter the temple and touch the wells. This exploitation certainly shatters the idea of a harmonious society. By revealing the discrimination and class antagonism, Anand in Untouchable is voicing the social protest and the transformation of hierarchical society through his characters. The writer is making an urgent call for equality, justice and freedom for all so that the harmony and unity of the society could be maintained.
